I'm wondering if the quality is any better than the 2007 disc that has been available for a long time.
The cover art for the region free disc is brown with a shot of Powers Booth sitting in his chair.
Were you ever able to solve this mystery? I ask because there seem to be three different DVDs. When I say "different," they may differ only in the keepcase cover art.
The first one is the region-free one you mentioned with this cover:http://c3.cduniverse.ws/resized/250x500/movie/017/7481017.jpg
However, both the UPC code (089859850523) and the release date (8/28/2007) match that of the older release, the one with the the keepcase cover that has an extreme close-up of Powers Boothe's face and the name "Powers Boothe" directly above the picture as seen here:http://revmikewilliams.org/guyana-tragedy-the-story-of-jim-jones-dvd-2
Finally, there seems to be another
DVD with a 2/26/2008 release date and a UPC code of 089218554697. That one has the text, "The shocking true story written in blood!!" on it, with some red splotches. At the top it lists Powers Boothe, James Earl Jones, and Colleen Dewhurst as the stars as seen here:http://movieworld.ws/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Guyana-Tragedy-The-Sto
Which of the three offers the best sound and picture, or whether all three releases are exactly the same
, is a mystery to me. If anyone knows, I'd be much obliged if they could set the record straight.
I've never seen that first one you posted and the second link is dead. I also don't see any versions that came out in 2014. Here's what's on Amazon right now:
Region-Free, Reel Enterprises, 05/22/2007, UPC code 883629234595:
I have this version and I can confirm that it's horrible. The audio features a constant high pitched whistle throughout the entire movie. It's almost unbearable. The DVD company's logo is in the corner throughout the entire movie too. How appalling. I've never seen a DVD manufacturer do that!
Region 1, Alpha Home Entertainment, 02/28/2008, UPC code 089218554697:
Judging by the reviews, I doubt this one is much better, but at least I don't see anybody complaining about whistling or a production logo. Maybe people's expectations are just too high for a movie like this.
Region 1, VCI Entertainment, 08/28/2007, UPC code 089859850523:
I believe this is the disc the OP is talking about. There aren't a lot of reviews complaining about this specific release, so I ordered it. Yes, it's a dirty film print that was probably taken from a VHS, but the audio is better and there are no company logos on it, so I'm happy.
From what I can tell, the VCI version is probably the best of these three. But definitely stay far away from the Reel Entertainment one.
