Is the new DVD cut?

Hi. Does anyone here know if the new DVD version of The Great Rock´n´Roll Swindle that has come out recently in the UK is the full uncut version? Or is it just the same as the old 1980s video version which had to be cut by the BBFC in order to get an 18 certficate? If so, does anyone actually know what it is that´s missing from the UK cut?

reply

As far as i know it isnt uncut. I was a bit dissapointed by this release, well it does have audio commentairy and improven stereo and 5.1 surrond sound, however, the surrond doesnt work the way it is suppose to, so the stereo track is far the best. The movie is pan and scan, so if I remember correctly about 25% of the picture is missing all the time, wich is clear at many points. The picture quality isnt much better than a brand new VHS tape

Dunno what scenes are missing, I know that the "catwomans" underpants are animated on, and she was naked for real.

reply

Animated? They looked real.

The Technical Specs page has this film as being made in Academy Ratio, so either they are wrong or this DVD is in the correct Aspect Ratio.

If I recall, Sue Catwoman's panties were added before the UK cinema release because the actress playing her was underage.
I heard that a Japanese laserdisc may have this scene un-edited but I've never seen one.
The only thing that is different from my original vhs rental tape is when Steve Jones is looking for Malcolm in the brothel and barges in on the kinky execs. The guy being spanked with a guitar has the 'tweety pie' song removed and is replaced with moans and comedy noises. This is due to the copyright expiring and the band not wishing to pay to have it renewed.

The only cut version i've seen was when it was televised on CH4 and they removed both mentions of Myra Hindley ("You Need Hands" poster scene and the "No One Is Innocent" line) and when Jones calls Irene Handle a *beep*

Apart from the missing tweety pie song, i'm sure the dvd is the same as the original movie.
Shame it wasn't cleaned up a bit, and would it have hurt to have added a montage of the many deleted scenes as an extra? I know most of them appear on "The Filth And The Fury" but this is where they belong.

Sue Catwomans underwear was definitley added pre cinema release.
As I saw this movie at the pictures when it first came out, and her black drawers were on then - but aren't on in the inner of the gatefold LP or the CD foldout

This release is such a missed opportunity - there is so much unused footage.
Stings scene, Loads of Sid Animation, All the Russ Meyer footage that was filmed.
It should've been a double disc release with promos, deleted scenes and a definitive making of documentary etc...

I watched the DVD last night and technically, I was unimpressed. The picture was taken from an NTSC video source (lots of blurring on pans, not to mention bleeding reds) and was grainy and flickery. It may have been shot full frame, but this isn't an open-matte transfer. There are too many instances of picture information cut off out of frame for that.

I didn't listen to the commentary, but the interview with Julian Temple was marked by terrible audio and shoddy video.

This fascinating film deserves a far better DVD transfer than this. I'm glad I only rented it!

Well, having just watched the DVD again from start to finish with the Directors Commentary track on, I think I have found the answer to my original question as to what alterations the BBFC forced Temple to make to the movie in order for it to be passed for cinema release.

At the very end after the Friggin in the Riggin animated sequence, a lot of headlines suddenly show about Sid Vicious being arrested in relation to Nancy's stabbing death and then there is a shot of how the British papers reported Vicious' own death.

Apparently all this was added at the request of the BBFC, who told Julien Temple and company that they could not release the movie if they didn't show the terrible ending to it all and use the then recent death of Sid Vicious as the moral of the story.

i remember seeing it on tv about 1982 and remember the animated bedroom scene with sid and nancy ,as shown on the something else/friggin in the riggin single cover, previously and still missing from releases on vhs and dvd

reply

i have only ever seen this film on dvd , the new re release.

and what i noticed to be missing, and this is by going frrm scenes taken in the filth and the fury are-

the animation featuring sid where hes in a bedroom and wielding a chain.

also the scene with paul cook on his way to hindley air port where he comes across sting and the police and they take over his car, i think they were called the fabulous blow waves?!!

anyway thats all i can think of, and thats just in cross reference to the filth and the fury.

reply

The scenes you mention were never in TGR&RS, the animated scenes never made it and the Paul Cook/Sting scene was also either removed in the cutting room or was a left over from the aborted "Who Killed Bambi" film.
It would have been nice if Temple added these scenes from TFATF as extras on the Swindle DVD.

They stuck knickers on the chick playing Catwoman? I got a version years ago that had her naked. (I know this because I dug it out to check if I was right.)

I didn't know this fact... I'll have to look out this other version anyway since the copy I have looks crap through years sitting in a box.

reply

As I said in my earlier post, the DVD doesn't look much better sadly...

i have the original 1982 showing that channel 4 shown, there is no censor on sue catwomans privates, the bedroom scene with sid and nancy is there, there is also an extra song from the winterland concert and the sid scene selling pistols merchandise on the market stall, channel 4 have shown the film many times after 1982 but are all censored,i reckon this is about the nearest "uncut" version there is,the 1982 channel 4 version runs in at 107 mins, whereas the video and dvd releases(i beleive)run in at 104mins

reply

It was not shown on Channel 4 in 1982.

It's not "carrying on about it" more than simply never knowing this was done (for me anyway).
