Communist Bush Men

I was watching this movie in my biology class today and realized that the Bushmen Society embodies the ideals of communism and proves that communism can work in real life, not just in theory. The narrator talked about their society and covered everything Marx had written about in his Communist Manifesto with the exception of the proletariot revoltion of course, since that does not apply. Although, the bottle showed how unstable a communistic utopia would be. I'm not a communist or anything, don't get me wrong, I just started thinking about it and wondered what other people would think.

The further back in history you go, the more the individual relies on his / her society. (Marx in his criticism of "liberal" ideology.) Once you bring in capitalism, or personal property, currency, banking etc., the more you can build up your personal wealth and use it to dominate other members of your group, thus relying less on others and more on your personal clout.

I think this is what is reflected in the San culture shown in TGMBC. Perhaps we were all happier as hunter-gatherers before striped toothpaste and landing on the moon.

lmao yes of course communism can work in a community of a around a dozen people. hell ANY social system works with so few people.

Also, it really only took 1 single special item to hurt their communist ideals. It doesnt work, even in a perfect little haven that these villagers had, it as easy for it to be ruined. People Are basically the same everywhere.

I'm in Freshman Biology and I dont get to watch it! What gives! We never get to watch cool movies in school, with the exception of part of Saving Private Ryan in History...

You have a point there, but we have never actually seen Marx's style of communism in action. The problem with it is that once you give someone that much power, they get greedy for more, and BAM you got that creepy little pajama-wearing dude who's sitting on a nuke in N. Korea.

reply

What I was trying to say was that communism actually works on a very small scale.

The Ju/'hoansi (the group that these people are from) aren't Communist or tribalist. A tribe has a social heirarchy; the Ju don't. They're an egalitarian hunter-gatherer society. Or rather, they WERE, prior to Europeans showing up in Africa.

This movie isn't really a good representation of their culture, anyway. Check out the documentary "N!ai: The Story of a !Kung Woman" if you're interested in the culture. N!ai was actually one of the extras in "Gods," and the filming of that moview is partially documented in this one. If you're REALLY interested, you can read "The Dobe Ju/'hoansi" by Richard B. Lee.

And yeah, I actually AM studying anthropology.

When this movie came out and it was a hit around the world, there was some discussion in the news about how the Bushmen's tribal lives have been changed by modernity.

They already no longer have the idyllic life pictured in the movie, and in fact, I think somebody must have thought up the coke bottle as a symbol for what was already going on.

I remember there was talk about real lawsuits involving Bushmen over property, which they had not done much of in the past.

they were fighting because the lack of resources. they only have one bottle. if we can give each one of them a bottle, then there will be no fighting among them. capitalism is the business of making scarcity. scarcity increases demands which in the end profits the elite.

Joke topic? Someone who is looking for communism, will find communism. As can be seen on this board, someone looking for racism, can find racism.

Get over looking too deeply into something as simple as a comedy. You think any Bushmen count Marx as a favoured author?

Good luck finding a tribe with an alpha male/chief and telling him he is equal to an 18 year old boy with an illness.

Exactly, which is what is happening in Jo'berg with water right now

"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles." Ronald Reagan

reply

You're absolutely wrong.
You realize that when they begin the movie and describe the lives of the bushmen as happy and care free its a satire right? Its not actually what life there is like, its supposed to be what Western people think about the bushmen.

Also, if you wonder about Karl Marx' idea you dont need to use bushmen. Just read about countries where it failed or is failing now. USSR, China, North Korea, Cuba. People are suffering in all those countries.

reply

People are suffering in capitalist countries too so what is your point?

"Communism" makes sense in a small community, because the psychopaths tend to get killed, and the robbers and lazy are rejected. However, in a large society, it is too easy to cheat the system. Hence a hell of a lot of government power to control the society, hence a lot of trouble.

For instance here in Canada, we all have free access to health care, and it annoys me when I see a fat person smoking a cigarette, as I know they're going to cost me tax dollars down the road. But that person has the same rights as me, and I can't give them a big kick in the ass. However, in a small community, there tends to be less "rights" because they are not needed. There is also more pressure to please others in such a community.
