I've always liked the film, but it's hard accepting the refusal by the mother, when either Gloria or the granny suggested the police should be called. She just says NO! Her family faces extinction and she doesn't want to call the police to just possibly, get some protection in time? She doesn't even give a reason.
They'd rather just play at being tethered goats.
It was of course convenient for the film's plot.
Also convenient for the film's plot was the fact that the might of The Mob could not get a book off a little kid.Talk about stealing sweets off a child.

Also, why didn't Gloria hide the kid (and his entire family) in her apartment? Why does she go on the run so soon? Stupid.
shareSuppose you call the police. Are they going to camp outside their door 24/7 and escort them to school, the store and wherever they need to go? Because that's what it would take; otherwise the mob would get them eventually anyway.
