Whats up with the kids clothes?

What was up with the kids clothes? The dress shirt, bell bottom dress pants and dress shoes does not seem like something a kid in 1980 new york city would be wearing on a normal day. Especally being from a poor family. Didn't most 6 year olds wear tennis shoes back then? Also why didn't she buy him some new clothes with all that money? She had on something new everyday while the kid wore the same Sunday clothes through the whole movie.

The style he's wearing is sort of the tail-end of the fashions of the disco era so it's not so unusual for him to be dressed that way. There wasn't an abrupt change in styles from the late 70's to 1980 or so. I can't tell whether what he is wearing is expensive clothing or not. I think the only reason they didn't get him clothing was because that is something that's involved and takes time to do and maybe they didn't have time since they were running and hiding out so much whereas she only had to grab a few of the outfits she already owned.

Grrrrrr!!Aaargh!!

Good observations.

I think you are right.

Sorry to admit this, but I wore clothes like that back then...to school, church, etc...to "go out and play" we then wore jeans-sneekers etc...

Ugh! I was 10 in 1980 and was froced to wear that same "outfit" for pictures!! Cringe everytime I come accross those Photos!!! Hot Mess!

reply

Ditto!!

What we really could've used back then was an Old Navy.

might have something to do with the fact that the whole family was packing and ready to flee? you're wardrobe always gets packed up and you get to wear what's left...

She should have cut his hair and changed his clothes, especially since his face was plastered on the TV news and in the paper.

But jac91604, the whole point was, she had only survival on her mind, she well knew the MOB and their ways-she did a great job-I dont think I could be nearly that sharp on the run like that-GET'EM GLORIA!!!

THOSE WHO MATTER DON'T MIND...THOSE WHO MIND DON'T MATTER!!!

What I wonder is, since the weather was so hot, why was Phil wearing a long-sleeved shirt?

reply

Or they could have been hand-me-downs.

I was a little surprised she didn't at least, buy him a change of clothing. I imagine they had been on the run for two to four days. There are so many cheap clothing stores in the Bronx...every block. They could have taken five minutes to slip in and out. I'm sure the boy could have used a bath too. I know he said he didn't like them but I'm sure he stunk by then. Anyhoo,...still, great movie. I always cry on the last part. Cheers.

Maybe he bathed off camera at some point. His socks and underwear would have been pretty smelly too by the end of their adventure. In real life I couldn't imagine anyone not taking the time to get him a change of clothes after a couple of days. I think they could have hid a lot better too changing him into some different clothes.

He's wearing a huckapoo shirt and "dress pants", something the mother would have dressed him in to go away, not sloppier clothes. I think the above poster was right in saying almost all was packed. But Gloria, tall, blonde, etc., would have stood out an extra mile going to buy clothes for a little Puerto Rican kid. Too risky.

If you look at fashion towards the end of the 70's and going into the 80's it was very much like this. It was horrible. Polyester knits and awful prints. But that was the style. You don't really see a serious change in fashion until about I'd say 1982 and definitely by 1984. MTV, the punk and new wave movement from Great Britain, and the Miami Vice look began to influence fashion by then.
