What doesn't Gloria and the kid just go away - far!

Gloria had plenty of money why not rent a car or buy a plane ticket and get out of the city! Why does she go from hotel room to hotel room and from cab to bus and stay right in the city? Why not flee to the country? It's not like she is being followed the whole time. If she really wanted to get away she had the means to do it. I could never figure out why she stays in the same area going in circles. Also, why not wear disguises of some kind? A well dressed 50 year old blonde white woman with pretty hair and a 6 year old puerto rican kid who won't shut up and is wearing the same awful print shirt everyday stands out!

I just saw this for the first time in probably 20+ years last night.

It's highly likely that Gloria did not drive. That's not unusual for someone who's lived in the city all their life so that leaves the rental car out.

We saw numerous scenes in the movie where they went to a bus/train station and were spotted by the mob. They had men watching so that's probably why flying was out.

You're right that it doesn't make sense that they didn't try to disguise themselves. All I can say is that maybe we were supposed to think they didn't think of this (until the end) because everything was so crazy.

Perhaps you are right about Gloria not knowing how to drive.
With the money Gloria had (throwing hundred dollar bills around)she could of hired a chafuer to take her anywhere she wanted to go. Why not get on a Greyhound and really get out of town? That's where the disguises could of really come in, if you thought the mob was watching. She didn't need to stay in that city. There were so many ways out! I think there are alot of plot holes in this movie.

Yeh, she could have dressed in drag as a man and the little boy could have been dressed as a little girl.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I didn't understand why Gloria fled from one NYC neighborhood to the next. Why not pay a cab to take them to the state line? One of those $100 bill could have taken them way out of town. Maybe even all the way to Pittsburgh. Or closer than New York City, at least.

I guess the point is that Gloria wanted to stay in her comfort zone. Why?

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

As for the question about why she doesn’t just go far away — she does. Her big plan involved going to Pittsburgh. The issue is that the mob kept following / tracking them. For example - when she first gets to the train station, she encounters the mob in the diner. Later when she again tries to buy a train ticket, some mob-looking dudes come behind her at the counter, making her nervous.

At the last hotel, she does mention something like “we can’t keep going like this. They’ve got the trains, the planes, the whole city covered. They’re probably in Pittsburgh too”

So it’s implied that she couldn’t easily get away with a plane ticket. Hence, she never made an effort for trying to fly out of NYC.

As for rental cars — I don’t know. Perhaps she didn’t know how to drive? Were rental cars even a thing in 1980?
