GLORIA LIVED

GLORIA was on during the 31 days of OSCAR ON TCM. Cassavetes was about realism not surrealism. The Ending is simple and it works for the picture. It was all about fate and being in the right place at the right time. One shouldn't over analyze the ending of Gloria.

he said something about Gloria was alive because he didn't want the kid to have no one. I love the ending. Her smile. Hug and kiss. The kid jumping into her arms. Smiling. Taking the wig off. Perfect ending. I still think about the love they had considering she didn't like kids, "especially yours.." Gloria said to Phil's mom. And then the kid saying, at the cemetery, "my mother loved you but I didn't ....until now..." Sweet. So she HAD to live. I saw this movie two or three times in the past 15 years or so, but it was so good I still think about it from time to time.

Agreed. It was beautiful and unexpected as for me. Had no idea about the movie and just watched it for the first time, so i didn't know what to expect. Not to mention, in most movies similar to this one, the main character pushes his luck so far that he usually ends up being killed at the end. A perfect world, anyone?

So i was really not expecting her to show up alive. Also, i thought her unseen death would add credibility and realism to the movie and thought this is what the director was aiming for. Her survival makes it a tad more far-fetched and unbelievable, but it makes for a beautiful ending full of emotions, so i take it too.
