The full DVD is on archive.org !

Some already pointed out, that there's a low quality download of the american cut, but there's also what seems to be a full length >6GB download in DVD quality!
http://www.archive.org/details/Virus*_*F*u*k*katsu_no_hi
Stupid imdb beeps away the URL, because it contains the F-word... so you have to remove those *.
There are also some smaller versions. They say it's public domain, so it would be legal to download it. :-)

Netflix has the full version. I just watched it last night: running time was 2 hours, 30-some odd minutes

You just need to download the 7 MPEG2-files (the big 1GB ones + the one 92MB file). You can watch it on your computer right away. To burn it to DVD you need this file: http://www.hunkvideoonline.com/virus/?file=2&sort=1
It has instructions inside.

I am not downloading this film to find out (since I have the dvd) but if the MPG files are VOB's you can easily make a DVD following these steps:

first create a new folder called VirusDVD

inside VirusDVD create a folder called Video_TS and put all VOB files you downloaded into it

then create another folder (also in VirusDVD) called Audio_TS (nothing will go into this folder but its necessary to create a DVD)

now this can be easily burned to DVD w/ programs like IMGburn
http://www.imgburn.com/

open IMGburn, select write files/folders to disc and select VirusDVD folder and burn to disc.

enjoy.

Thank goodness I also passed Suspension of Disbelief 101

You can also just stream it, each url:

using VLC - www.videolan.org. Works on PC, Mac, *nix.

The hunkvideo file isn't there now. You'll need to generate the ifo files to make a real DVD. Ifoedit can do that, and it's free. Here's the instructions. Ignore the part about changing the audio and video attributes.http://www.ifoedit.com/createifo.html

I did edit the audio and subtitle info to give them names, and also copied the subtitle palette from another DVD's ifo (that solved the green box problem when editing the subtitles). I also made the subtitle track default to "enabled". http://forum.videohelp.com/topic330866.html

Then, follow the instructions at Archive.org to change the subtitle colours.

There is also: http://www.dvdflick.net, which should be able to work with a range of video formats.

You can also get the long version of this movie on DVD through BCI in a Sonny Chiba box set.

The version of this film in the public domain is a pale shadow of the Japanese original released in the now-OOP Sonny Chiba Action Pack from Ronin/BCI/Adness. The American cut is nearly FIFTY MINUTES shorter than the Japanese cut, and the latter is an altogether more satisfying experience. The frustrating distribution history behind this picture is the reason a truncated version even exists in the public domain. Avoid that version at all costs and seek out the 156-minute version instead. You'll be SO glad you did.

Hmm... I downloaded a 156 min version of this movie from somewhere. It was either archive.org or youtube. The file I have is just over 2 gigs.

There is currently a 156 min version on youtube (not my account):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRw_aiV5q5k

The only 2 gig version I could find reference to on archive.org has been removed for some reason. There are two other versions still up--

http://www.archive.org/details/Virus_Fu*kkatsu_no_hi (remove the asterisk, since imdb's censorbot is illiterate and turns that url into "*beep*".

http://www.archive.org/details/cco_virus

No idea how long those two versions are.

reply

The US versions online have several issues.

No subtitles (really annoying, makes watching the movie next to impossible for the Japanese scenes).

Really badly cropped aspect ratio, means a large area of the screen is missing.

Insanely bad editing, theres no proper ending. They end after the nuke attack. Apparently theres more after that. Which would make sense.

They don't have the šhitty American circa 108-minute version, or the original 156-minute version. The title comes up as a "save". Meaning its not available but eventually should be, so if you click it it'll add it to your queue and then become active if the movie becomes available. But something tells me it'll be edited version, since Netflix has a šhitty history when it comes to carrying the full versions of movies (The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, The Harrad Experiment, etc.).

Thanks to the censoring it appears to not only be the film we can't name* but we can't even link to it. So, I've mad a shortened link that'll work:

http://tinyurl.com/virusfilm1980

* Fukkatsu no hi - see? See also: Violent *beep*

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094271/

I might start a list.
