I thought that, even in 1980 when scientific fields were still much more dominated by men then they are now, that ratio of male to female research personnel that happened to be in Antarctica when the virus hit was pretty extreme. I would think at least 10-20% would be women rather than 1%. Today it might even be close to 50%.

Of course you also had the crew of the British sub (an all-male crew, still very common even today), probably 150-200, skewing the numbers as well, but still.

I would think men of a certain age (like the Admiral & others in charge of the group) would be out of the running. Only the guys in the 20s/30s would get a shot. One wonders how many babies 8 women could have in their fertile years, sounds like they might not be able to sustain the race.
