I have a hard time believing an old woman could kill fit, young healthy teens. Not buying it.
shareMrs. Voorhees' wasn't an "old-woman" ,but likely in her 40's or approaching 50 (which may seem old depending on the viewers' age)
But what gave her an edge is that the film showed that she caught the victims off- guard while they still were in a moment of shock, or she was unseen as depicted in the Kevin Bacon scene. I don't think she was chasing them to act out her killings. Alice had more time and physical distance to spar with her, while dodging the weapon.
Late 50's early 60's maybe. No way she's in her 40's. Is it just me or did anyone else think she had dentures.

Despite her age, Mrs. Voorhes looked physically stronger (in addition to costuming her in those bulky clothes), and I think Alice was very near to her demise without the axe. Young women would be much more intimidated as targets than the boys, also.
If we had Final Chapter as canon then she was 49 when she died. The actress was 54 at the time.
shareI can believe it. If someone is angry enough, even at the age of 45 to 50, they will go about killing people they deem responsible for whatever they are angry about. I admit though that her killing most everyone with guns would probably be more realistic. But then it would have just been action horror.
shareThat's why it would be hard for Alice to prove that she didn't kill everyone. After all, she's the only survivor. How could she prove it was actually Mrs. Voorhees who committed the murders and she killed her in self-defense? If you're a cop, your automatic suspicion is going to be on the lone survivor.
shareFor the same reason that murderers walk among us: guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. No actual (forensic) evidence that Alice committed the murders either
shareShe could tell the please that Mrs Voorhees mentioned her son Jason as her motive for the killings. Once the police check it all out etc then it would pretty much prove Alice is telling the truth, especially when Alice would have been a baby when Jason died etc.

She did look kind of stocky and had a scary set of choppers. I wouldn’t want that woman after me.
