Camerawork is quite nice really

Watched this again for the first time in a long time and it was nice seeing simple and honest camerawork combined with nice framing and panning without feeling like Michael J Fox was the cameraman.

I was just about to make a topic about this after watching it. This is probably the most well shot slasher film that came out of the whole craze after Halloween. The closeups are well defined in this movie, not too close and not too faraway. The camerawork and the acting really make this movie stand apart from the other slashers, and it was made on the same type of budget! A lot of people would complain about the acting in it, but they haven't seen real ham that's for sure!

I always loved the camp setting in this film and the campsite that it was shot at was rightfully chosen, and the cinematography captures the whole mood of the location very well. The pans are smooth and steady, and even the handheld shots don't look half bad either!

Yeah it's a great example of what can be accomplished on a minimal budget.

I've often thought there's really no reason this couldn't be remade now (using digital) on a super low budget, if people had enough skill and the basic location.

F13 ticks off a lot of boxes like atmosphere, good photography, menacing antagonist, sincere acting, characters in peril, mystery; most low budget filmmakers can't do that. So you're right it could be remade but my inner cynic thinks probably not as well. For example compare F13 to Ryan Murphy's 1984 which is supposed to be a spoof and love letter to 80s slashers but is missing everything that made F13 a classic.

The only way to remske a movie like this or any 80,s horror is a complete revamp of style sumthin new to add , any great horror movie was seemingly cutting edge at the time ... i think so to remake , doing the same thing in the same style wld be retarded

reply

You misunderstand, the movie elements I listed are the basics of any good movie now or then but require artistry and skill lacking in most filmmakers. It's easier to see in something more simple like portrait photography which seems stupid easy on the surface but if you look at a lot of portraits some photographers really stand out, their photos are just better-- better lighting, better composition, better framing.

reply

I agree with you , but f13 the original is no masterpeice , its a product of its time that had great marketing

reply

True, it's no masterpiece but has endured because it's very well made for the budget. Roger Corman made a career making low budget films that were better than their budget because he paid attention to the basics like sound, camerawork, and atmosphere. Back then F13 was the right movie at the right time, low budget and competently made.

Hey ive seen the movie over 5 times i like it and definently a great movie . I just reckon if we can remake we need a fresh attempt somrhing different

reply

Did you like the 2009 version? Many didn't but I liked it. I got to watch it with someone who doesn't watch horror and he was freaking out during the scene where Jason is under the cabin.

reply

Yeah i liked it but i like alot horror

Didn't see AHS 1984 yet. Is it worth watching besides missing the boat as far as what it's a homage to?

reply

Not in my opinion. The camerawork is amateur, no atmosphere, the plot is convoluted and the storyline changes from episode to episode via twists. It also has the worst acting of any season. All the big talent sat out this season if that tells you anything. Ryan Murphy is super busy these days and I doubt he had anything to do with it. To me it feels like it was made by interns and the script ad libbed.
