Is this movie sexy?

Or is it depressing and out of control with drugs and stuff?

reply

Jodie Foster plays a vixen type I hear.

I just watched this on DVD last weekend. Foster doesn't play a vixen but a 'mother hen' to her three high school friends. Not a great film, but worth a watch.

A coming-of-age movie about four high school seniors who try to find their paths in life with no adult guidance. Not a great film, but OK. Not depressing - just serious. Some funny moments. Drug use / alcohol is part of the story with one character.

Jodie Foster plays 'the mother hen', and she's quite good.

(I saw this movie this past weekend on DVD).

Maybe I will look it up based on your recomendation

reply

I think you will enjoy it. If you're old enough to remember the late 70s / early 80s, it will be a great trip down memory lane.

Is it like Heathers?

reply

No, not really. Not to me, at least.

reply

So its a bunch of high school kids drinking and pretending they are bad assed?

reply

It's a bunch of high school kids who look out for one another, as they make their way into young adulthood without many adult role models in their lives. They get into difficult situations along the way (one does do too much drinking), but in the end realize their strengths and how to overcome certain obstacles and continue forward. I thought Jodie Foster was excellent in her role, trying to lead everyone on the right path.

They're more like dumb asses.

Some funny moments.

My favorite was when they were looking for Annie on Hollywood Blvd. and Jeanie gets out to talk to a pimp/drug pusher about Annie. When she gets back in the truck, Madge says, "I don't know how you can talk to that guy. He can hypnotize you like a cobra and the next thing you know you're out on the Boulevard dressed like the Pointer Sisters."

I saw this movie many times, and even saw it at the drive-in when it first came out, but only recently I got the DVD off of Amazon. In the commentary director Adrian Lyne got a lot of stuff wrong. He said he started filming at the start of the disco era, but Foxes was actually filmed in 1978 or 1979 at the end of the disco era. Then he said he wanted to use some of The Runaways songs, wasn't able to, but did get to use their song 'I Love Rock and Roll' in Flashdance. Except that wasn't a Runaways song. That was a Joan Jett song that became a hit for her 2 or 3 years after she quit The Runaways.

I'm surprised Summer's "On The Radio" wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this movie. Then again, it really had zero connection to the movie.

I agree, but surprisingly the Janis Ian song 'Fly Too High' did seem to be speaking of the characters in the movie, but I read she didn't actually write the song for the film, but some time before she wrote it about the gay bathhouse scene in New York City. When you hear the lyrics:

Anonymous, autonomous
Will likely get the best of us yet
Before you disappear
If you can lend me half an ear I'll regret
If I treat you like a number
It's because I can't remember your name
So have another cigarette
And help me to forget why I came

It could fit both the gay bathhouses in NYC and four teenage party girls in the Valley. I guess that's why the song was picked for the movie.

Just the other day I was reading about Summers hits from 1975-80. According to Giorgio Moroder, OTR was actually written for her Bad Girls album, and eventually left off for they had too many tracks. They figured they hold off for her next album but the movie soundtrack came first ( and her GH album followed with this on it).

Now I understand why the Academy never considered it for an Oscar: the song was not written specifically for the film itself.

Yes, it's totally depressing, out of control with drugs and stuff. Which of course is true with teenage reality!

reply

neither sexy or depressing its a coming of age story, nothing too original or great but it has its moments.
