SHINE YOU!

Oh my gosh, EVERYTIME I watch this movie I just crack up because I remember how SHINE YOU was the big thing to say in the early 80's! It was for a very brief time, but boy did that saying get alot of mileage at my highschool =). I've NEVER heard this in any other movie, have you???

I just LOVE this movie sooooo much! It takes me back to my teen years like nothing else does =).

I graduated high school in 1976 in TN and I never heard that term! It must have been very short lived and maybe never made it to this area.

reply

I finished high school in 1980 and I don't recall the phrase either.

reply

Graduated early 80's too...and never heard of it.

SayNoToRemakes, I live in Tn and while I didn't hear it at school, my Dad who was California born and raised would say it all the time, and my dad was born in 1950. He went to California all the time while living in Tn.

The first time I ever saw the movie was on a regular TV station, and I had just assumed that "Shine You" was the edited version of another phrase. Until I saw it unedited.

I am not a native English speaker...please could you be so kind and explain me what " Shine you" means? :)

Purplewitch, the phrase "shine" means to ignore someone or something. It can also translate as in "screw you" or *beep* you." The slang word originated in the 1970s but how it evolved I'm not sure.

Thanks Sox! ;)

reply

Thanks I was wondering what that meant. I graduated in the early 80's in TN and that was not a local slang. I assumed it was a southern California phrase.

reply

It was, at least down in Southern California. And yes, it only lasted a brief time (think "gag me with a spoon!"). Maybe it was only a Valley thing.

reply

In the '80s, if something or someone was bothering us, friends would tell us to "shine it off" or "ignore it". But I never heard anyone say "Shine you!" until this movie. Maybe they were trying to start a saying??

reply

I thought it was one of those stupid over dubs created by TMC? I think they may have been saying "f ck you?" But then, Jodie says the f word right after that.
I only remember the phrase "shining" someone on, meaning to ignore someone. "Why are you shining me on?" I'm not too sure. Fun stuff!

I'm from SoCal, but inland. I never heard it at my school, but I remember my girl cousins from the Long Beach/South Bay area saying it. This would have been about '77-'80.

Dear 'x': Hello. >>> There is *another* movie that uses phrases like "SHINE IT ON" and "SHINE ME" and it was also a Southern California-made teen-interest flick (though it could be more accurately categorized as a 'Teen Exploitation' flick!). It is the 1978 "B" movie called "MAG WHEELS". The video title, however, is "SUMMER SCHOOL" and this obscure movie was released by ACTIVE HOME VIDEO in 1985 in a BIG box (though when -or- if you could find this movie now the big box has usually been cut-down and fit into a clamshell case).

A few years ago I wrote a 'User Comment' review on MAG WHEELS/SUMMER SCHOOL and there are a few other reviews as well where different 'Commenters' muse about the 'SHINE IT ON' phraseology!

Gotta luv dem '70s and early '80s.

Where the Hell did all the fun go? Sheesh . . .

Do you mean TCM or AMC? The films I've seen on TCM have been un-fooled-around-with. The stuff on AMC I've seen has been edited for content and for time.

reply

So did I (a la The Breakfast Club's "flip you" dubbing). Don't tell me it was an actual catch phrase. I was a tween in the late 70's & I don't recall that phrase ever being used.
Maybe it was just something older teens used? And only in California?

reply

Must have been LA-only slang.

i grew up in orange county, CA, in the 70's and remember that phrase being thrown around. "she shined him off" or "he's such a jerk - shine him!" another phrase that was used at that time was "smell you," like if a girl bragged about something or thought she was above someone else, we'd say, "smell her"
