Other cult, FZ-like movies

Can anyone please recommend other midnight cult movies, similar to the Forbidden Zone?
ps-I'm not really interested in cult horror and gore.

Thanks!

Can you be a little more specific? What sorts of "cult" movies are you interested in? A LOT to choose from, fortunately! I'll be glad to make some suggestions if you can give me a little guidance as to what you like.

Ok, how about completely whacky fantasy musicals with bizarre characters, for starters ;-)
Thanks!

I'll try to give you some tips! Its a weird musical world out there.

* Alice In Wonderland
Porn musical of the classical tale.

* Oh! Calcutta
Controversial Broadway musical and sex.

* The Wiz
Its Wizard Of Oz vs. Saturday Night Fever with only black actors in the suburbs.

* Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention's 200 Motels
A musical with Frank Zappa. Bizarre.

* Rock'n Roll Wolf
Like a medival wolf musical

* Cannibal! The Musical
South Park makers first thingy. Cannibal musical.

* The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
If you liked Rocky Picture Horror Show

* The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.
Of course.

* Hedwig & the Angry Inch
Yep

Thanks for the terrific suggestions, a-moss!

I totally forgot about "Cannibal! The Musical". Also, can you please specify in which year the porn version of Alice in Wonderland came out? THere are so many adaptations out there...

I clicked on this thinking you meant Frank Zappa-like movies, LOL

Your not the only one who thought that.

Nice quote, is that from his book?

"I've been living on toxic waste for years, and I'm fine. Just ask my other heads!"

reply

I'm not sure where it's from, I found it on Wikiquote. I like it better than that Music is the best quote everyone seems to love so much. I always thought it was a joke.

Yeah, the "Music is the best" is from a song in Joe's Garage Act III. It doesn't mean anything, but it's characteristically Zappa. I prefer "Without deviation, progress isn't possible." and "If you don't vote then democracy doesn't work. Consider the alternative!"

reply

Yeah, "music is the best" was from Packard Goose, and a ditsy girl was saying it. "Without deviation, progress isn't possible" is a good one. Too bad he got sick before he could have run for president, I would have voted for him.

I saw a bumper sticker once that said "Don't blame me, I voted for Zappa." He would have my vote too.

Wonder where I could get that for my car.

Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen (1970)
aka "Even Dwarfs Started Small"

Watch The Resident's Icky Flicks. It's a compilation of their music videos and other various material.

Also, ceck out Earaserhead and David Lynch's early short films.

Personaly my favorite of the childhood cult films this is inspired by is March Of the Wooden Soldiers.

Also The Man With The Golden Gun. The most awkwardly twisted of the bond films. Herve Vilechaize, A three nippled marksman, and funky color versions of the backgrounds in this film.

reply

Definitely check out THE APPLE (1980).

It's a glam pop musical which has media dictatorship, brainwashing, satan, hippies, flying limousines, tons of glitter and brilliant fashion and music.

If you love FORBIDDEN ZONE, you will definitely like this one!

reply

I haven't seen Forbidden Zone, but I think Phantom of the Paradise fits the category. A 70s rock opera adaptation of equal parts Phantom of the Opera, Faust, and Picture of Dorian Gray. Directed by Brian Depalma.
