A Surrealist Masterwork!

If you're a fan of Surrealist art, you really need to check this movie out. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you're probably gonna hate it.

I'm not using Surrealist in a general sense, either. The movie's pretty much a love letter to the 1920s school of Surrealism. Dali or Man Ray would be laughing at all the in jokes. You don't need to be an expert, though. I'm just a casual fan and I got enough of them to have a terrific multilayered ride.

One warning: It's set in the 1920s. Everyone is portrayed through insulting 1920s stereotypes, including African-Americans. Those I found jarring, particularly the occasional brief appearance of actors in blackface. It's historically consistent and the director was obviously working very hard at that. But it hits you in the very first scene, and I think that, at the very least, was a bad call.

It was was made 40 YEARS AGO, pal. The director didn’t have a fucking crystal ball.
