A version without ghosts?

I remember seeing a version of this film (for the first time, on tv) without the leper ghosts. It was the fog itself that killed. Is this possible or my memory fails me?

Maybe the fog was poison gas.

Maybe you had an exceptionally shitty tv? Bc if you turn down the brightness and contrast you can’t see them.
