when it opened

Just curious about something as it was well before I was born.

The whole "Episode V" thing. Was that something announced prior to its release? Or was it a surprise for when people first saw it? Either way, what was people's reaction to it? Did George Lucas say at that point he wanted to do a prequel trilogy down the road? Or was it just not commented on and open to speculation?

To my knowledge the original Star Wars was re-released with "Episode IV" before The Empire came out, so it was hardly a suprise anymore at that point.

Correct , this was the 1st star wars movie i saw in the cinema and it was absolutely epic, the effects, sound, story , i was blown away, can still remember it to this day

No one cared, everyone knew it was a sequel to Star Wars, no one at the time referred to it as Episode V or the first film as A New Hope.

This is true

My guess is they originally intended the “Episode V” to not be taken literally. It probably was meant more like to make it seem like it was a random episode taken from a “Buck Rogers”-type serial or maybe the idea was that the original 1977 Star Wars was “episode I” and “episode II-IV” were events taking place between the events of 1977 and 1980 films (ie “the bounty Hunter we ran into on Ord Mandel”).

We saw it as a sequel back then. The only knowledge we had of Empire was television ads and articles in our local newspaper.

I remember seeing a trailer a few weeks before it came to our local cinema.

Yes, we were excited!

I remember hearing back in the day about Lucas starting in the middle of a planned 9-film saga but I don't know if they announced the actual numbers of the segments until much later.
