Topical Question:- How do Humans survive cross planetary virus infections in Star Wars?

There's currently a problem on this actual planet called Coronavirus with the novel virus strain crippling nations around the world due to people being infected without having any immunity.

That got me thinking, is it explained anywhere in Star Wars canon or legends material how people aren't infected - or bringing new infections - when visiting new planets with the potential for cross contamination?

e.g. In this film, we see Han and Chewie wearing masks whilst repairing the Falcon. Yet everyone arrives in Cloud City, bringing all their filthy germs, and walk about no problem, no questions asked. Only Darth Vader appears to be taking any precautions...

I definitely laughed at that Darth Vader comment. I now wish that the prequels' explanation for why he's in that suit was, in fact, that he's a germophobe.

It's never explained in-universe, unless the explanation is in one of the numerous books of the extended universe. The movies certainly don't talk about it. That's the kind of detail that they aren't really interested in in what is essentially a fantasy film set in space.

I'd imagine there are sterilizing rooms coming in and out of places like Cloud City. Maybe there are some on spaceships. Like, every time they walk up or down the ramp on the Falcon they get de-bugged. Ships and cities might scan people for new virus strains, too.

Alternatively...

Maybe from an evolutionary perspective every species in Star Wars only survives because they all have hyper-power immune systems which respond unbelievably fast compared to what we've got.

Additionally, it's likely that, given the diversity of species in the Star Wars universe, species are beset by their own set of illnesses. In real life, viruses that jump species only happen when living in *close* proximity (ie: a one-bedroom apartment where you keep chickens without cages). As long as Han and Chewie have the whole Falcon to live in, the virus won't make the jump.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was wondering - I tell you one thing, I bet this has been explained somewhere in Star Trek's extended book universe!

In Star Trek, they'd scan you with "biometrics" or something if you come in via shuttlecraft. The transporter weeds out viruses. I know this because there are a couple episodes where they get space flu or whatever and there's always a line of dialogue about how the transporter must've missed that one.

It's true, there are no diseases in Star Wars! Either the medicine of that time is so good that they've eradicated disease, or people are just too cool to get sick!

So really, the only people who ever need medical attention are people who've suffered blaster or light-saber injuries, or those who are dying of broken hearts (while looking absolutely stunning).

I always assumed better medical technology. Like you can get fully nerve functioning cybernetic implants to replace3 appendages. I figured they master anti viral medicine by this time.

They use a North Korean style containment program. No problems under the benevolent Emperor.

If everyone would just do what authorities say and stop being rebels, we wouldn't have these problems in society.

Universal vaccines?

reply

I think midichlorians beat up any viruses.

Get shots?
