Why didn't they update the tauntauns?

Out of all the effects in "Empire" that needed tinkering with the tauntauns seemed like the most glaring ones.

I'm more a fan of the untouched originals, but yes, if they are going to go through the trouble of doing a Special Edition with updated CG, they probably could've redone the Tauntauns. But if I remember correctly, the stop-motion shots of them were fairly short and from a distance. When they were up close (as big puppets), they looked good enough. You could even see their breath coming out.

I hear ya, by far the most outdated special effect in Empire, especially in the 1080p Blu-Ray, they could have done it seamlessly like Yoda in the TPM remaster.

I just hate the whole updating of the titles even with the later prequels. I mean, seriously, c'mon!!!!! [angry]

Star Wars the original="Stars Wars Episode IV"
Star Wars-The Empire Strikes Back="Star Wars Episode V"
Star Wars-Return of the Jedi="Star Wars Episode VI"
before the reboot in 1999 with Natalie Portman and so forth.

Hey, maybe we can have a third Airplane movie and call the original "Airplane 5"(but the totally different tongue in cheek style of the Airplane films of the early 80s would call for it).

I'd rather George Lucas just keep the original titles of the first three.:)

reply

People still going on about this! We understand why it was done, just look past it and enjoy the films.

Very good point! And may the force be with you!

reply

What? The 1977 movie had "Episode IV" added to the title scroll way back in the late 1970s when it became clear that there was going to be a sequel, and then ESB had "Episode V" in the title scroll right from the get-go. Same with ROTJ and "Episode VI."
None of this had anything to do with The Phantom Menace and the prequel trilogy.

Nice irony.

I love the tauntauns !!! I want a tauntaun !!!

I thought they were fine. It's funny though cause Empire Strikes back had the least noticeable changes. Besides showing the snow monster more, what were the other changes to Empire Strikes back?

reply

The appearance of Cloud City was noticeably different.

Right, there were close-ups of the Falcon and cloud-cars flying among the towers

Neat but completely unnecessary

And showing the wampa, I maintain, was NOT an improvement - better not to see it
