Alternate Version

I recently bought The Dogs of War on DVD and it was quite different to the one usually shown on TV. The christening scene at the beginning isn't in the DVD version and the scene where Shannon goes to meet Jessie is completely different. There are several other notable differences and cuts and it feels a little more rushed as a movie. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the slightly longer TV version on DVD?

reply

Well I've got the region 2 DVD and the christening scene is in there all right.
Also present is the 'glass in the mouth' scene (ouch!) which IMO is always cut from UK TV screenings.

Blimey. What the hell did I buy? Does your DVD have the argument between Jessie and Shannon in the motel room? In my version, they have lunch and he talks about going away to live in the West. Then it simply shows her dressing in the motel room and saying goodbye to a sleeping Shannon. It just feels rushed and awkward. The arguement between Jessie and her father about her leaving the house to see Shannon is missing as well.

To ynot80lf, in answer to your question about the glass in mouth scene: it's a scene where Christopher Walken's character breaks some glass and places it inside the mouth of someone he's trying to get information from. When the information is not forthcoming, Walken slaps the man on the side of the face with predictibaly gruesome results.

The two versions of "The Dogs Of War" on DVD are like this:

Region 1 U.S - U.K Director's Cut - 118min
Region 2 U.K - U.S Theatrical Cut - 101min

Wierd Huh... excellent film by the way.

reply

Sorry everybody.
Just checked and my copy is actually the region 1 version with a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes.

Apologies for any confusion caused.

reply

The REgion 1 DVD has the whole arguement between Jamie and Jesse and it has the christening scene which was not in the theatre version, or the vhs.

The film was on BBC1 last night (I've never seen it before) and it did have the 'glass in the mouth' scene.

Man I've been jipped! I've got the region 4 version and it only goes for 89 minutes!!!

reply

The current region 1 version you'll find for sale is 104 mins long.
The current region 2 version you'll find for sale is 100 mins long approx.

The 4 minute difference is due to the different number of frames per second of each region.

What I'm trying to say is the 118 min version is nowhere to be found.

I bought the R2 disc first and felt that somethings were missing. I then bought the R1 and it looked more complete (so I returned the R2 to my local store for a refund - I'm a regular customer so it was cool). That said, I remember seeing this movie at the cinema and I thought the torture of Shannon in Zangarra was longer and nastier. It might have been a press screening - I went to a lot of those (saw a longer much gorier Hellraiser 2 as well once). Region 1 is the way to go, though, although it is a film that deserves a 'special edition' with a Walken commentary (however unlikely).

Hi; i saw the turner classic movie version and it was the same as the dvd version!!

I just bought TDOW and was stunned that so many scenes were missing. I have the VHS version and its 114 min long and the DVD 100 min.
This did not make me happy- so i'm still searching for the original uncut version...don't know if it can be bought.
Have to stick to the old VHS version i guess :)

I too have had my pants pulled down by the UK dvd version...I dont even think it says 'Cry Havoc...and let slip the...' at the beginning either...and I had a feeling that they cut the argument between shannon and his lady out...I could even swear that she has an arguement with her father at one point...this is all very annoying...at the very least I seem to have the 'uncut' version taped from telly...but DAMN...I bought the DVD so I wouldnt have to watch that crusty old long play copy...someone should be taken out and horsewhipped for this.

BUT...its still a great, great film...and Chris Walken is awesome! Its one of the great films that showcases how amazing his dialogue delivery is...like in the bar scene with that officer..'Drink!'

awesome.

>>>"What I'm trying to say is the 118 min version is nowhere to be found."

That deepdiscountdvd link lists the common region 1 at 119 minutes. I don't own it, but re-rented it recently and can promise that it contains the glass in the mouth scene, christening, motel argument, argument with dad, and a fairly long torture scene which I would assume is uncut....

reply

Yeah, I have a Canadian Region-1 MGM DVD and it's 119 minutes.

Still need to get the book and read it :).

I got a copy with only french and spanish subtitels and it too runs for at least 115 minutes (plus the endtitle probably makes 119), but I has to be a european release right? I mean, if it was canadian it'll probably have english subs.
So, it's definetely out there. ;-)

Version on Netflix currently is 118 mins. Has scenes I'd never seen before like the full argument, etc.
