The director Sanders-Brahms

The direction in this film is suberb. Does anyone familiar witht this director know of other film she directed. Germany has had some exceptional women directors notably Riefenstahl and now Sanders-Brahms, as this film convinved me of.

reply

Yes, in fact she has directed 24 films, 9 of which had won international awards.

Here some of the titles

“Angelika Urban, Verkäuferin, verlobt” (Angelika Urban, salesperson, engaged) her first short film

Alive/ Jews in Berlin
The Future of Emily
Apfelbäume

Her next film will be released on 2007 and is called Clara, the music composer Clara Schuman.

Anyway you will find more information on the Internet.

I have also seen her Mein Herz - Niemandem! (1997), Apfelbäume (1992) , Flügel und Fesseln (1985), Berührte, Die (1981) and I think she has autheur qualities.

It is also interesting to see that she is participated in Lumière et compagnie (1995) .

The only Sanders-Brahms film I seen is "Berührte, Die", a devastating film with an extremely moving performance from Elisabeth Stepanek playing a disturbed woman shunned or abused by all strata of society in a cold, harsh Berlin. Her films seem to be all but impossible to see, in the UK at least.

Supernatural perhaps, baloney perhaps not

Hello,

Just curious, how did you manage to see "Berührte, Die"? This film is extremely difficult to locate in any form for home viewing, did you see a screening?

I have been searching for a copy of this film, wanting to see it for decades now!

Maybe you can help me out?

Many thanks,

Steven

I first saw "Berührte, Die"/"No Mercy, No Future" in 1983 at the Arnolfini in Bristol. When it ended I and the other ashen faced members of the audience headed straight for the bar. There were several shocking scenes in this depiction of insanity, religious mania and exploitation (amongst other themes) that still haunt me today. Sanders-Brahms's Germany is as fascinating, decadent, cruel and surreally seductive as any classic portrayal you care to name. Several years later "Berührte, Die" was aired by UK Channel 4, accompanied by that company's experimental rating system that flagged a symbol in the top corner of the screen to advise the viewer to exercise caution before watching as it contained Adult Themes. It was a short lived policy, much like the announcement that there would be less ad breaks during feature films. Perhaps the excellent BBC4 will show it one day.

Will there ever be another rainbow?

reply

Seen all of them at a retrospective in a small film festival.

reply
