Sam Wanamaker's 'Date' music

What on earth was the conductor playing while entertaining one of the non-finalists and smoking pot? He described it as "modal rather than serial" which sounded good but, of course, really didn't make sense, at least from what I could hear. (In fact, it sounded serial rather than modal.) The style made me think it might be something by either Pierre Boulez or Luciano Berio. Does anyone know?

Take a look at the thread titled "Not her mother" on this message board. Adam Stern gives a little bit of fun info on that piece.

This is my favourite scene in this movie and my favourite way to enjoy music. Supine, on cushions, candlelit room, head between the amps, preferably somewhere I don't have to worry about disturbing the neighbours... er, not necessarily smoking though.
