Dreyfuss make up

Oh my God... I forgot how just seriously scary he looked in this movie. I'm a Dreyfuss fan but I have to wonder where this film falls in his addiction trajectory. I can only imagine how ill he must have been to have had SO much make up on him in EVERY scene. The blush is ridiculous. Everyone else in the film looks relatively natural and then he comes in and it's just Madame Tussaud-esque.

I have the movie on videotape recorded from one of the movie channels around 1992 or thereabouts, so the color is pretty muted. I hadn't noticed he was sporting evil clown makeup. But, yeah, this was shot during his addiction years.

When he was doing the promotional rounds for "Mr. Holland's Opus," I remember him saying that it was a challenge playing a music teacher because he'd never done a music-related movie before. I think I even shouted at the TV, "Hey, what about 'The Competition'?" Cocaine must be a hell of a drug for him to forget doing that film.

I looked up The Competition on imdb partly because I wondered if anyone else was shocked by Dreyfuss's make-up. In addition to the pancake makeup and blush layered rather heavily over his face, he appeared to have on eye make-up as well. I was most distracted by the eye-shadow he seemed to be sporting in quite a few scenes. I also got a kick out of his several of his outfits in the film-particularly the cap and tan corduroy pants. He has an unusual way of walking-he's a short fella with rather stubby legs and he struts, almost like a peacock--very cocky and self-confident. In the scene where he's on-stage picking out his piano for the competition this strutting (in my fav outfit) is particularly noticeable. As he's aged (or matured) he definitely has lost a lot of that attitude. It's very present in other of his great films, "The Good-Bye Girl". I hope I don't sound overly critical-I've been watching and enjoying his performance since the early 70's -"The Good-Bye Girl", "Jaws" "Close Encounters" . Later on I discovered his earlier role in "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" (sp?). He even has a funny cameo in "The Graduate". He is a true original.

His looks have improved with age I think because he is no longer primping to try to make himself look more like a leading man. The pancake make-up, the permed hair, the eyebrows and the hat are all distracting.

"cameo on "The Graduate".

He was not famous when he appeared in "The Graduate". It wasn't a cameo. It was just a tiny part.

He looked drugged out during "Whose life is it anyway?", his eyes were bloodshot and face was puffy.

Never noticed until I watched this on HD (used to own the VHS). Agree on all observations. Knowing that he had a lot of problems about this time in his life explains a lot and makes his performance kind of remarkable. He looks like he's really playing very well.
