Excellent film, but abrupt ending

This is right up there with its American counterpart North Dallas Forty among the greatest sports films that focus more on the business of the sport than the game itself. However, The Club left me wondering whether they met their goal of winning 12 out of the last 15 and getting to the finals. Was the end match shown actually the finals, or just the first game where the young highly paid phenom Geoff finally got his act together?

It's been a good while since I last watched The Club, but if I recall correctly they do manage to win most - if not all - of their remaining 12 games in order to reach the Final.

This is confirmed, I think, after the players have revolted and removed all those old-timer photos from the boardroom, and then we see some street celebrations of the Collingwood team riding a bus with thousands of fans cheering them on; while at the same time there's an overdub of a TV sports program with commentators extolling in amazement how the club reached the final after such a poor start.

So I think it's safe to assume the game you see at the very end is the Final.

The ending is abrupt. They make the Grand Final as they are in the Grand Final parade before the final game.

There's a huge sign saying "GRAND FINAL" on the stadium before the final match. It's pretty obvious they achieved it anyway through the movie's final dialogue, "I can't believe some board members wanted to sack him". Try putting your phone down next time you watch a film.
