Hi mcpeterson...

Wow, I never thought I'd get a response. I have kind of a special attachment to "Cheaper to Keep Her." The corner convenience store used to rotate in old cheesy movies, and one day I rented this one when I was 13. It was, like you say, cheesy. Somehow or another, it became a tradition for me to watch this movie every summer (I dubbed a copy when I rented it). I did this right up until the end of high school.

My thoughts are that it's a fun '80s comedy... not funny, but fun. I also found the plot quite interesting. I've read your review a few times for it, as it is one of the few bits of commentary available on this movie. I have a few questions for you:

1. How exactly does one get to be a die-hard Ian McShane fan??? Is he not a pretty obscure actor??

2. Was "Cheaper to Keep Her" a theatrical release, a TV movie or straight to video?

3. Did any part of this honestly make you laugh?

I'll await your responses and we can talk more about this obscure cheese gem.

Hi McPeterson,

Yes, I have often thought that I was the only person in the universe to have made "Cheaper to Keep Her" a tradition during my formative years (or any kind of tradition, for that matter). To be honest, I think that's what I like about it. I feel like I've discovered something so cornfully amusing, and no one knows about it except me. My friend used to tease me about liking this movie because of how gay the box cover looks. I wouldn't let him watch it, though, because it was my little discovery.

That "I found it" charm is what appealed to me a lot. Plus, the movie is fun. It became a summer tradition because that's when I first rented it, and you know how fun school-free summers are when you're 13. Some of the feelings of summer started to attach themselves to this film. In fact, for a few years it wasn't really summer unless I watched it. I'd watch it in the living room at night and have a blast. The soundtrack is kicking.

Like I said, I really enjoyed the plot of this film, too. I think it's a great idea for a movie that should someday be revisited. But some of it is downright painful, like the part where Mac Davis tries to track down the one ex-hubby and he's told that the man raped an elderly woman. Or referring to his privates as "the lobster." Or the old guy at the seniors home being bribed with black and white nudie pics. Stuff like that. It's interesting that Joe Regalbuto, who later starred on "Murphy Brown," appears as a gay man. He's the only one I recognize from anything else. No... that's wrong... I have seen Mac Davis in "teach yourself the guitar" infomercials as well as "The Sting II" and "North Dallas Forty." He's actually a likeable presence. Also, the old guy who owns the second-hand store was in Cocoon and played one of the deceased husbands on "The Golden Girls." Do you think Mac Davis is embarrassed by this film today???

McPeterson, I'm willing to bet that you were the one who added the quotes/synopsis for this film's page. Am I right???

As for the TV or theatre question, I remember reading online that it was a TV movie, but then again, the box says it's rated "R", so how can that be? Also interesting is that on one humor website, someone was combining film names and came up with "Cheaper to Keep Her By the Dozen," and the person actually merged the plots of the two movies. Incredible for such an obscure film. Also, there are at least a couple of sites where you can get two versions of the film poster (this makes me think it had to have been a theatrical release).

I wish there was more info on this film available. IMDb has nothing... I'd love to know how much this movie made.

Anyway, sorry to get long winded. I'll look forward to your response.

They used to show this a lot on Cinemax in the early 80s, I watched it everytime it came on. I loved it at the time, but I haven't seen it since then, so I don't know if it would hold up for me now. All I can really remember now is the scene where he was trying to buy condoms, and...well, that's pretty much it, lol.

I remember seeing this film in the spring of 1981 during a field trip with my high school journalism teacher. I was (and remain) a Mac Davis fan, so I might have even suggested it. I wish I had a better memory of it.

Was it really rated R? If so, some of us might not have been old enough to see it (though the teacher would have counted as an adult guardian). I seem to remember her regretting taking us because of language, nudity or both. I wish I remembered more about the plot. I'd love to see this again!

Yes, it was rated R. I imagine your former teacher had a problem with the profanity and nudity.

I remember seeing this movie at the Cine 6 theater in Corpus Christi, TX.. It was a first date with a girl named Belinda. It was(as she put it)a cute little movie. I've only seen the movie one time since..on HBO. I've never seen it on VHS or DVD

Saw it once, back in 1982. I enjoyed it well enough!
