Just finished watching it...

Contains spoilers.

I had seen this movie on "Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments," (I owe that show so much, lol) and I thought that it looked interesting, so I bought a copy.
My mum and I turned off the lights and settled down to watch it and before long, we were both watching it through our fingers.
I should point out that I don't get easily scared when it comes to horror and I love classic horror; I've seen lots of them and only two have truly terrified me: the original "Amityville Horror," and Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."
The scene where John Russell is sat at the piano and the door starts to slowly open, my first thought was it was one of the servants, but then I also thought that maybe it wasn't and I was actually leaning sideways trying to see who was behind the door and when it was revealed that no-one was there I leant back in my seat.
Likewise with the scene where the ball that John had previously thrown in the lake came bouncing down the stairs towards him (that was the scene they showed on "Scariest Moments") and the seance scene was just so creepy.
I thought it was very tense, creepy and atmospheric and it is definitely on my Halloween movie list now. :)

I've heard of "The Haunting," and it's on my to-get list. :) I have a feeling it will be good, and I can't wait to see it.

The Haunting (the b&w original) is my #1 ghost movie. Close behind is The Innocents (b&w) and The Uninvited (b&w). Do yourself a great favour and watch all three. No blood, guts, or dismembered body parts but what goes on your head. Is it there or do you think it is there?

TC still affects me that way. I hide my eyes during the scene where the little girl sees Joseph under her bedroom floor.

Same here; it was just SO creepy! :D

I too have a massive amount of appreciation for Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. That's, in my opinion, the single best horror movie special ever put together.

BURNT OFFERINGS is also pretty damn creepy.

I also recently watched this for the first time and loved it. The one scene of the little girl seeing an illusion of Joseph in the bathtub was creepier than anything I've seen in recent years.

Such a shame that it hasn't gotten a special DVD/blu-ray re-release with commentaries and behind the scenes stuff. A film of this caliber more than deserves it.

There's going to be a bluray release... in Japan.

I just received the Blu-Ray today. Sadly, the video quality of it is extremely, extremely grainy. I've seen some early 80s films cleaned up much better than this. Also, aside from the trailer, there are no extras. The UK DVD at least had a commentary track (though I'm not surprised it wasn't included on a Japanese disc).

It did get a nice DVD release with extras and commentary... in England.

I got a copy for Christmas about three years ago and watched it for the first time since then. It is just as good the second time around as it was the first, but I found it more sad than scary. I felt sorry for Joseph and what was done to him was horrible. I also felt sorry for Senator Carmichael because he was just as much a victim as Joseph and didn't even know he was lied to all his life, so he didn't deserve to die that way. The only person I think should've had revenge against them was Joseph's father. However I hope that people finally knowing the truth about what happened brought the spirit peace. It was a sad film all the way around but it is still great.

Two scenes that freaked me out. Of course the ball dropping down the stairs and the flashback scene if Joseph's murder and him crying to his father. Gives me shivers.
