To those who saw this in theaters back in the day

What was the atmosphere in the theater like? Did people yelp, jump out of their seats, cover their eyes?

Our entire family did when it was on HBO in the early 80s. Sorry, that doesn't answer your question.

I remember seeing it in the theatre. Creeped me out like no movie has since. Still does.

I don't recall much of a reaction from the audience except the occasional jumping in their seats. Then again, it was dark and I was looking through my fingers.

lol That's pretty much how I still watch it.

The biggest scream from the audience was for the glass hitting the wall; for some reason no-one expected that. The shattered mirror came in second. For the most part the audience sat quite silent during the film, eyes glued to the screen. There was no tweeting, no celphones, and not too many kids. A simpler time.

I really wish I could've seen this in theater. I don't think it was ever released in theaters in the USA though.

Get a digital projector, and screen it at your next appropriately-themed block party.

A fine thought, but I would have nowhere to put the screen.

Bedsheet. Clothesline. Can't charge. Sell BBQ. Invite clergy. Have a weenie, Father!

I saw it in a theatre in 1980, but I don't recall a crowd reaction. In fact I don't think there was much of a crowd. This was hardly a big hit. As for my reaction, it was pretty lukewarm. There isn't one scary bit in this movie. The reaction I've read here baffles me.

I saw it when I was 6 at the Bay Theater in Seattle, lots of jumps and screams.
