why did joseph attack claire at the end ???

she was supportive of john and sympathetic to joseph.

That's been a topic of much speculation on this board, with each of us having our own theory on it.

My theory is that Joseph was sending a clear message by attacking Claire: anyone who was in the house was going to die, so they'd better clear out while they had the chance.

I think by the end Joseph wanted to destroy the house (the legacy, the lies it represented, the money, what his father killed for) and he wanted her out so she wouldn't die. I don't know, as he opened the door to let her in.

I think he was so full of anger, rage, and sadness from what was done to him that he wanted to destroy anyone or anything he could in order to try and vent those emotions. Senator Carmichael had no knowledge of what his father had done and had no responsibility for it. He was just as innocent as anybody yet Joseph's wrath was so strong that he had to be a victim because he was guilty by association. I thought in the first half of the film, Joseph seemed sad and just wanted people to know the truth but towards the second half of the film he became more angry and vengeful. That's my take on it anyways.

The first time I watched this movie my kid was about a year old.

He's a teenager now and I think the last bit is a six year old boy throwing a tantrum.

He's angry, he's hurt and he's lashing out.

I got the feeling that Senator Carmichael didn't actually know, but suspected something, aside from suspecting John was attempting to blackmail him.

Joseph was intending to destroy the house at the end so I always saw it as she was driving her out of the house so she wouldn't get hurt. He basically does the same thing to John too when he shows up moments later, trying to go upstairs, but then the huge gusts of wind come up blowing him over the banister. He doesn't want them in the house and wants them to be safe.

There is the tantrum aspect of it too.

Can't expect too much logic from the ghost of a six year old boy.

reply

I think he wanted her out. Nothing could stop him from killing her or on the way out if he wanted them dead.
