Are they

Are the Village People gay? I thought that I heard that somewhrere before.

You only go around life once so you might as well spend it smashed

reply

The way that I heard it was that you had to be gay to be in the group.
the guy who created the village people was gay and made that a requirement along with some dancing, even if you had no other talent.

is this discussion still going on?
only the indian (felipe rose) is gay
the rest is not

leatherman (glen hughes) died several years ago

reply

Nero-28,not really...and does it really matter?

reply

OMG how can there be any question about Felipe, Glenn, David and Randy... of COURSE they were all gay!!! The lead singer was the only straight one in the group.

reply

No, they weren't. They were put together by a gay producer to portray various macho gay stereotypes. It was all a joke. Many people at the time got it while others thought they really were gay. The group itself outlasted the producer, Jacques Morali, who died of AIDS in 1991.

really?

Victor Willis, the cop, was the only straight member of the original Village People line up.

Ray Simpson, who replaced Willis and plays the cop in the movie, is also straight.

reply

I heard that one or two members of the Village People were gay. I grew up with this group in high school (class of 1976) and in college (class of 1981). I am straight. Well, wait, someone would say, 'how can you be straight and like a band formed out of gay stereotypes'?

Well, I like this group very much for their singing ability, theatrics and sense of humor.

I read a magazine interview with Felipe Rose (The Indian) a while back and he
stated that he had been with his male partner for over 20 years. Felipe still
looks sensational today, by the way. I once read a magazine interview with
David Hodo (the Construction Worker) and he came across as surprising narrow
minded concerning gays. I think he is straight.

reply

You were not alone Hugh Clayton.. they were a worldwide hit. It was a sign of the times. Personally I preferred Boney M. but then my name is SUNNY!

Who cares?

I can't believe I am replying to this thread. I think these are the preferences of the Village People lineup that appeared in "Can't Stop The Music".

Ray Simpson - Cop - straight
David Hodo - Construction Worker - straight?
Glenn Hughes - Biker - gay
Randy Jones - Cowboy - gay
Felipe Rose - Native American - gay
Alex Briley - soldier - ?
