Edited On Epix?

I watched the first 30 minutes on Epix Drive-In and it seemed heavily edited, especially when Tiberious is talking to Caligula on his island full of sex slaves. They seem to be looking at things but we are never shown exactly what except through distant shots and brief close-ups.

Maybe the editor just sucked at his job.

Yeah, I was pissed when it was on IFC and it was only the R-rated version. So much for, "Always uncut."

IFC was once great, (use to show a lot of foreign movie.) but now is crap. Now they have commercials and big budget films.

reply

And not just that, but they show the same movie 5 or 6 times during a 3 or 4 day stretch.

I understand why they did that on HBO and Showtime during the 1980's - VCR's weren't that common. But now, with DVR's and the ability to record multiple shows at once, why do they need to keep flooding their network with the same movie over and over and over again?

reply

What I was told when I wrote to IFC was that by having commercials, they would be able to get more high quality programming. I know, B.S, but that's what I was told.

reply

I'd prefer no commercials, but I can accept them. I just don't like how they edit out content. I'm sure they'll use the BS excuse of, "We chose to show the US/European release and that is why that scene wasn't shown."

reply

I prefer no commercials too, except when there are to many, and a 2 hour movie ends up being 3 hours.

I haven't watched (Or I should say, refuse to watch) IFC since they started having commercials. Do you know if the movies are edited now?

And they aren't showing better content. The content was already great before the changes.

And what is it with a lot of the mainstream stuff? I thought it was independent film channel.

For sure, Caligula was edited. The problem is, a lot of the other movies are ones I've never seen before, so I don't know if they were edited or not.

I don't have a big problem with the mainstream movies, as I don't go to the theater too much or rent a lot of movies. But do they really need to show the same movie a dozen times in a week? I love Fast Times At Ridgemont High - but do they need to show that 3 times a day for 4 days in a row?

reply

I'm against editing but really--the original cut of "Caligula" was X-rated and pretty sick. I'm not shocked that IFC cut it. I used to love that channel but stopped watching when they added commercials. NOW they're cutting films. Now big deal--TCM does it too although they say they don't.

Funny you should say that about TCM. I recorded Leaving Las Vegas off of Sundance. I get editing out (not just blurring) the nudity, but they also got rid of the language. Like when she said about having mouthwash to get the taste of come out of her mouth. I'm thinking, isn't this channel about showing everything - including the nitty gritty?

I recorded SOB off of TCM, and EVERYTHING was in that movie.

It made me  that TCM is more daring than Sundance or IFC.

There's a movie called "The Night Digger" which TCM shows every once in a while. It contains one instance of swearing and frontal male nudity which earned it its R rating. The last time I saw it the swearing was bleeped out and the nudity was shortened drastically. When they showed "Running on Empty" a few months ago a few instances of minor swearing were also bleeped out. Good to hear that "SOB" was uncut but they showed that REAL early in the morning.

reply

I know what you are saying about showing it early in the morning, but households with small children should have parental locks in use to block shows like that regardless of what time they are shown.

And, for someone like me who has a traditional schedule, I'm going to record the show to watch at a regular time.

In other words, to each their own, but I don't discount what they did just because they showed it early in the morning.

Here's my advice: don't ever watch hardcore movies on tv networks with commercials or strict fcc policies on nudity/profanity. They are not to be trusted, just watch it uncut on DVD or Blu Ray in privacy. Watching Caligula on network tv is like watching hardcore porn on the Disney channel lol.
