No, it isn't the worst film ever made, but yes, it is pretty darn bad. With so many good and even great music films from that same era - both from the UK and elsewhere - there's no excuse for this rather pointless exercise. Not really "film" so much as a "vehicle" to promote Hazel O'Connor.
In its feeblest of defenses, however, I must point out that there have been far, far worse in the genre: check out Susanna Hoffs' dreadful turn as the world's most self-conscious actress in 1987's The Allnighter, Anthony Perkins trying and failing miserably to portray a heterosexual in the Diana Ross disaster Mahogany [an anagram for Ham Agony!], the Spice Girls' 5-
minute cameo in Spice World, Prince's delusional ego-trip Under The Cherry Moon, and Mariah Carey's Glitter, which defies description...
And at least the music was sort-of decent [though the lyrics have dated horribly].
For the flipside of this - a really charming and fun musical from the same era - see the 1982 Aussie sleeper Starstruck! Or if you'd rather stick with UK fare, 1974 David Essex glitter rock "vehicle" Stardust is truly great .. and as hit-the-nail-on-the-head realistic as This Is Spinal Tap...
BTW - the synopsis here is completely inaccurate. Her ambition is thwarted by her "purist" ideals...
