What's the deal with Willy?

Why did he choke the girl in the barn? She was trying to be nice to him and flirt with him and he chokes her? When I was younger I saw this and that scene bothered me a lot. It made me not like Willy.

Then he yells 'the wellllllll' - what a moron.
