I gotta say that was some house Richard built, it had a 2nd floor with a deck, and a slid too, It must of took him years to bulid that place..

reply

It isn't like he had a lot else to do. But yeah, it was a bit much.

Then again, it sort of look like the house a child would build, if he could.

That's an actual rental home on that island. The houses Richard and Emmeline built in the book were much simpler. But the film house is the kind book-Richard would have liked to build. He was described as kind of a clever engineer type.

I would have lived in it, if he was there.

If you notice in the movie, they are older when they actually start building it, so it leads me to believe that they did live in a simple hut until they got older and were able to do more things.

It was a very impressive hut indeed. Definitely something I wouldn't mind living in!

I don't get how everyone harps on about how on Earth "Richard" built that hut. (Not aiming at anyone's comments in this thread)

But did it ever occur to anyone, that this hut was their sixth or seventh hut?
That each time Richard built a hut using basic knowledge he gained from Paddy, he learnt new things each time he rebuilt it?

Their new hut they have poles sticking out from the sand in the bottom, obviously to stop large driftwood from hitting their supporting branches.

They have an open canopy that closes when torrential downpours happen.

All I know is, over the years anyone would eventually learn things along the way, and now that they are bigger and older they are more stronger and wiser!

reply

That's essentially the explanation in the books. Every time a storm wrecked their house they would build another, slightly better one. Their last house still wasn't as complex as what you see in the film, but I have no doubt that book-Richard would have gotten there eventually.

Well compared to the Swiss Family Robinson tree house Richard's house was a pile of twigs lol
