Did they die at the end of the movie? I could never figure that out.

But at the beginning of the sequel, they are deader than dirt. This is the same as in the book. The author changed his mind between books, resulting in a continuity error.

In the sequel, only the baby survived.
There was work started on script for a sequel where they all three survived and are trying to adjust to civilized live. But it went no further than that.
