Certainly they were literate. Richard was even able to read "subjugation," though he had to sound it out a syllable at a time and ask Patty what it meant. Later, he expressed a desire to discover a huge book, so he could read it until he knew everything. Emmeline stated that she could play Chopin on the piano.
