They knew people die

Like the scene when Em stepped on that rock-like fish and got sick. Richard prayed and said he was afraid of losing her.

He had a fear that she would "never wake up." He had some inkling of death from what happened to Paddy. Whether or not he really understood what happened with Paddy, he did understand that it was frightening and that he never saw Paddy again. He didn't want the same thing to happen with Em.

Dont forget that Em is an orphan, and Richard has no mother. Em even says later in the film that her parents are 'in heaven' so its likelt her guardian, Richards father, told her her parents had died and gon to heaven, and the children understand that this is finite, and to die is to never come back.

They dont understand the PROCESS of death-Richard finds Paddy's skeleton and is intrigued and awed as he compares it to himself-the theme is repeated as he examines his hand, and also examines baby Paddy's hands the same way :)

To them, though, "gone to heaven" was kind of like "gone to Burbank." It was just some place people went to.

The book did a better job of conveying their ignorance of death than the movie did. The movie did better with the whole sexual awakening (in part because a book didn't dare go into it that much in 1908).

xenophile, I love your respect and admiration of this movie. I see you guarding it and telling how beautiful it is all the time. Have you reviewed it on this site?

Thanks to not being raised religious or prudish, I knew and understood death from a very early age. The concept of death is not complicated, that is unless religious parents have sheltered their offspring from the truth... as is common.

It isn't always religion. Sometimes its jus parents fear that their kids will be scared.
