Brooke Shields didn't lose her virginity until she was 22. Em seems to have gladly let it go at the tender age of fifteen.

I absolutely support a teenager's right to wait as long as he or she wants to wait. It's better to wait a little longer, and find out that it would have been OK to do it sooner, than to do it before you are ready and wish you hadn't.

And sex will still be there, when said teenager (perhaps an official adult now) is ready. Sex is not going to go out of style. No matter how long she waits, she never has to worry that her potential partner will turn to her and say, "Sex!? Nobody does that anymore!"

I've developed a real fondness for that movie, and for the character. Today, a sexually powerful woman* is usually depicted as an evil force, getting away with murder and such. Barbarella is so wholesome that the Mathmos can't stand to touch her.
