Swimming Under Water With Eyes Open

Technical question. How are they swimming under water with their eyes open? They are in the ocean; hence sea water. I tried that once in the ocean. My eyes stung like hell. Eyes open in a regular pool sure. My eyes stung a little because of the chlorine. But nothing like sea water.

I have seen this in other movies as well. O.K., so maybe the "actors" are wearing contacts; but the characters are not.

You cannot open your eyes in sea water like they did.

yes you can, im from cuba and we swimming under the water with ours eyes open all the time

reply

Really? Huh. Next time I'm in the ocean, maybe I'll try it again. I'm trusting you, mata77. :)

im from Greece,we have salty Waters and im always with my eyes open... at the first time it may be a bit redish but you get used to it soon enough.. some eyes are more sensitive though and maybe burn or eachy a bit more..but thats it.

It's just a matter of how you adjust your eyes in childhood. I have used to watch under the surface as a child and I have no problems with that as adult. If you start it as adult you'll probably find it too uncomfortable to adjust, and maybe think about some consequences and risks as adult people often (too often in modern times) do, so being scared they don't even want to try.

The saltiness of the ocean compares pretty well with the saltiness of tears, but sometimes there will be fine sand or pollution in the water which can sting the eyes.

yep i have swum heaps of times with my eyes open in the beach water, im from Australia we grow up on beaches...but this town im in now, its alot worse to try to swim eyes opn in the water because the polution, its way more salty then the ones from my original place of birth.

reply

Realize i'm a little late on this one.. but ya, you can swim in salt water with your eyes open. I have done it before.
It stings at first , but you get used to it fast. And you can see clearer underwater with salt water than with your swimming pool chlorine water. Only problem , is when you get out an try to look around, your eyes burn more out of the water adjusting back to being normal than the salt water itself.

I guess some people are more sensitive than others. When I start swimming in a swimming pool or the sea my eyes sting, but after a while they get used to it and it's fine. I just look like I've been crying when I get out lol

reply

I'm more impressed with their ability to swim for long periods under water with their mouths open. Noticed it several times.

Very good point!

The thing that always gets me about seeing people swimming with their eyes open under water is that they still seem to have 20:20 vision. I've swum with my eyes open in the sea and the pool, and at best I can see vague outlines - can't always be sure that I'm heading towards the right person in fact. Maybe that's just me, as I guess pearl divers etc would have done the job with no mask over their eyes, but I'm Mr Magoo down there.

I saw this on a behind the scenes look once, I'm not sure if this movie did this but I know lots of actors and actresses have milk drops put into their eyes before and after filming. Specifically the show H20, the girls on that show said the milk drops helped them tolerate the water on their eyes more and it relieved them of redness. They also make special eye drops that are thicker and sometimes the same color as of milk, I've used some before and you can even see through your eyes a slight white filmy color, but it fades after a few seconds.

reply

After Paddy was born they had access to milk.

reply

Yes, I absolutely do swim with my eyes open. The salinity of the ocean feels somehow neutral and there never seems to be a stinging sensation. Cheers mate!

reply

Is it possible that the water was freshwater, not salt water?
You never see a hint of salt *crust* on them, nor anything they own.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

reply

You can't start your period in the water but you can open your eyes under water. Why ever leave my house? I'm learning so many things from the Blue Lagoon threads.
