You can teach a baby to swim. It was very popular in the 80s. What they found, however, is that many kids who learn to swim at that age, abruptly lose it a few years later and have to learn it all over again. No one is sure why.

actually a baby can swim from the moment it's born. there is a reflex that alows it to kick its legs and stuff, buut they lose this reflex soon after and have to learn it again when tey learn to swim. my mate told me this (she studied child development for 2 years.

unfortunately, what i want you can't give.

I'm not entirely sure this is accurate...

When I was born... my mother was a swimming teacher. We lived, literally, across the street from a lake, and I was never "taught" how to swim. I was taken into the water from near birth, and never really stopped. And I'm 35 now.

So.. It may depend on circumstances, but it never happened to me.

Em blows into the baby's face right before she dips it gently under the water. When teaching infants to swim it is done so that the baby holds its breath. Really. Teaching babies to swim was quite popular a few decades ago.

The baby in the movie was Chad Timmermans, the son of Claire Timmermans, one of the world's most famous baby swimming instructors.

The subject comes up often enough.

what?
Em finds that out by herself? !!!

Maybe they mean if the baby learns to swim but then doesn't practice for a while and then tries to swim again at age 3 or something they have to relearn. I would think babies would be good at swimming when they're first born because they spent 9 months in fluid.

reply

All babies can swim as soon as they're born.

I've even heard of tribes in africa throwing their newborns into a lake (Like how the Spartans used to judge how their babies were strong or weak) But I'm not sure if it's true or not

As far as the breath holding thing goes.....the more you swim the longer you can hold your breath. I can hold mine for two minutes and I know a guy that can hold his for 5 1/2 minutes and I've watched people on tv hold theirs for over eight

Babies can learn how to swim.

Everyone can adapt to their surroundings which is what they did, because they can hold their breath so long because they practice it while they swim, since they ARE completely surrounded by water, same deal with the baby...

You don't like it up the ass, do you, you redneck lunatic bastard!

reply

I was able to swim as a baby. I remember having to learn how to swim again, and being afraid to go in without my floatie.:)

They didn't actually hold their breath for 5 minutes, not even in the film or in their roles, but the film was cut together in a way that made it look like they were under-water, when in the film they haven't really been under-water for that long. I think they wanted to make it look kind of like life (and love) itself, so it's more of a philosophical construct than actual breath-holding.

Actually, in the commentary, it's mentioned that Chris Atkins could hold his breath for quite a while. I don't think they gave a specific amount of time though.

The swimming naked baby album cover you're talking about is the Nirvana album "Nevermind".

Great album.

Ever heard of water births?

reply

thats not exactly "swimming" because the baby still is getting oxygen from the mom through the cord. once the cord is cut however, the baby's nose/mouth needs to be cleared out so it can breathe on its own. if you put it back underwater then, im not sure if it can still swim, because i have always been wary of kids being in water until they can walk

I started teaching my oldest son to swim around 6 months and I also blew into his face. He didn't take to it till we moved to a place with a heated pool. He would go hand over hand in the water along the pool edge about 15 feet and then swim back underwater. Because it was a combo motel/RV park where people were going across the border to the cancer clinics we saw people from around the world. Some of them were quite perturbed that I was seated at a table 5 feet from the water with my eyes glued to him. I guess they considered it child abuse. He got to where he he would go hand over hand all around the pool. He also held onto my suit straps on my back and hung on while I dove unter the water from the surface. He is a former Marine now and has taught his daughters to do the same thing. Navy personnel said he swam better at 1 year than did a lot of their Navy buddies. All they had to do was to be able to float in 1983. He never had to be retaught how to swim. My daughter also learned to swim the same way. My younger son lost out since we lived in a place with no pool and no money for the community pool. The experts warned people who taught or had their babies taught tha these kids were not to be considered water proof and still needed extreme supervision. In other words never leave them alone no matter what.

As far as holding your breath for a long time, it can be done when your adapted so much to your surroundings, them growing up on the island, they are so used to swimming and are so comfortable with it, I've held my breath for almost 5 minutes in my swimmimg pool, I just totally relaxed myself and cleared my mind, was actually shocked that I did it so long, when you have total concentration and are completely relaxed and don't worry about anything at all, you can do it.
