Having survived all these years, a feat considering that they were very young when first marooned, they just gave up and committed suicide over a simple mishap with the oars. We had wonderful scenes of the swimming like dolphins and suddenly they cannot save themselves. What an idiotic script writer!

Well take into consideration, Little Paddy threw one oar out of the boat. Em used the other oar to spear the shark to save Richard. The shark hovered the territory for a while and they could not get back in the water to get the oar. By that time - the current of the ocean had gotten the dinghy. Prior to that, Little Paddy had put the "dead & burried" berries in the boat. Later we see him eat the berries and Em and Richard are extremely upset. They figured that they were gonners anyway because they had no food or water - this was the only alternative.
YOU MADE ME PLAY SECOND BASE!
A) They ate the berries (aka committing suicide) because their baby son ate them. They thought he was also going to die.
B) They did not die at the end. The dialogue (when they were found) clearly stated they were not dead, just asleep.

k im lost. from what I remember when they find them they say there are two of them and the captain ask dead or live and they say dead. then they hear the baby cry. did I miss something

The stupid sequel pissed all over the ending of this film. Not only is Richard's father completely absent but the 2 are all of a sudden dead instead of being sleep.
And the think Randal Kleiser who was the producer in the sequel approved of all this.
Same thing happens in the books though unfortunately. The end of book 1 is they're asleep. The beginning of book 2 is they didn't survive. It's the author that ruined everything. Bastard.
