A couple of years back I was trying to find out if you could have it in zero-G.

I'd be willing to assume that Emmeline's first period started just before she got into the water, but she didn't notice it until after she was in.

You might not be able to start it, but you can sure as hell bleed in the water from a period..

Physics.

There is a pressure gradient between the body and the water, which means blood won't be able to exit the body.

Wait...What? You're not too knowledgeable in physics. If your statement held any water (Sorry..bad pun) Hospitals would have pools so when they had a serious bleeder (carotid artery, slit wrist, etc) they would just dump them in the pool and stitch them up. Fact is if you're in the water while bleeding it is difficult for your blood to clot. So with a severe enough cut you could bleed out more easily in water. Have you never been in an ocean, lake, bay and stepped on something only to have it look as if you were surely going to bleed out? Talk to some divers that have cut themselves with knives underwater.
As far as having your period in the water I have witnessed this happening. But some girls swear they don't wear anything while on their period when they swim. So maybe it is a "depending on the person" thing.

Older post, I know. But there's a huge difference between the amount of pressure the heart would push blood out of an open wound (an open artery can shoot blood several feet), and the amount of pressure that'd just naturally be in the human body.

Even if that wer true, which it isn't, it is irrelevant. Blood is a symptom of a period, not the cause. Whether the blood could exit or not (and it certainly could; cut yourself with a knife in water and see what happens) has nothing to do with a period starting.

The original author of this thread is flat-out wrong.

you sir, know nothing of physics. your body would also experience the pressure from the water or do you think that if you only go into the water up to your neck that your head would explode from the extra pressure on your body. the moron is strong with this one

The body is fluid filled. When free diving in the ocean the pressure inside the body is the same as outside, as water is virtually incompressible. The lungs collapse under the pressure a bit and the ears have to be equalized as the diver descends.

Um, yes, you can start your period in water. Some women's periods stop in water, but that's uncommon. If you're one of them, consider yourself lucky!

Well, my first period came when i was in the water.
It's was really embarassing, because I was swiming in a club, and when I realized what happened, was too late. I'll never forget this.

Old wives tale. You most certainly can be in the water and have your period begin...and it doesn't stop just because you get into water. If you're not a heavy bleeder the water can dilute the blood the point where you don't notice it, but it does not stop flowing and water pressure doesn't keep it from leaving your body.

You can to start your period in the water. Have you ever taken a cup and held it upside down in water and it's pushed back up because of the air trapped in it, but if you tilt it to let some air out, water rushes in? Same concept. You can start your period, but because of the water pressure, it just won't bleed out.
