Well made but lacking

I've avoided seeing this Fulci film for years. I finally Netflixed it and after getting through it, my old reluctance was justified. I find "killer cat" movies boring, not suspenseful and not frightening and Lucio's entry was no exception. The good: excellent widescreen, polished cinematography, film stock/lighting, good animal "acting," good fire scene, fine English locations, a few gross-out shocks and macabre moments, Patrick McGee, Dagmar Lassander and David Warbeck. The not-good: Excellent Pino music score, as always, but not appropriate at all to the film. It's better suited to an erotic thriller than a supernatural creep show. Boring, wishy-washy script. Overuse of eye-motif. Poe-friendly yet incredibly dull climax. Lack of over-the-top disgusting Fulci effects and truly weird, creepy atmosphere. 6 of 10 overall. Disappointing.

Well, I really liked it. I love killer cat films because I love horror and I love cats, so nothing is better than the rare moments where my two interests combine. I enjoyed the Gothic atmosphere, the death scenes, and of course the cat itself. As a matter of fact, I actually watched this movie WITH a black cat on me most of the running time, so that is an experience I won't soon forget. I give it a 9/10.
