Not very Good

Fuller really blew it on this one. Too much of it is a rehash or "Steel Helmet" or "Fixed Bayonets". Other problems include:

1) A weak supporting cast. There's "Luke Sky-walker", and then there's ah....

2) Lee Marvin is great but looks 65, adding to the fantasy element.

3) Underdeveloped characters. Lets see, there's Lee Marvin, and some guy who smokes Cigars, and Luke Sky-walker, who can't kill people, and some Italian guy, and some blond guy and a bunch of faceless replacement nobodies who get killed. Plus a really evil Nazi Sargent, who wandered in from a DC Comic.

4) Bad acting. Lee is great of course, even the German guy who plays the Comic Book Nazi is good. But everyone else is charisma-free.

5) 1940s special effects and attitudes. All battle scenes look like they were filmed in the 40s. People get hit, grab their stomach and fall down. The Germans speak English, a few explosions here and there but its mostly Americans with rifles and sub-machine guns shooting at Germans with Rifles and machine guns. The Germans always miss, the Americans always hit.

6) Low budget. A lot of it looks like an over-lighted TV movie. Omaha Beach has 20 guys and 1 ship. Fuller uses 3 Tanks, which double as Shermans and Panzers. No scene has more than 20 people in it. Usually its just Marvin, the 4 horseman, and a couple Germans or civilians.

7) Filmed almost entirely in Israel. Makes some of the European scenes rather unrealistic. BTW, The Irish scenes are OK, and so are snow scenes. Also, using Israeli extra's as "German" soldiers and Civilians - also unrealistic.

8) Fantasy scenes. Out of place in realistic movie. The insane asylum, the mother giving birth in a tank, a German soldier hiding in Gas Chamber, French Calvary riding to the rescue, an infiltrator eating lunch with the squad.

9) No plot just episodes.

10) Marvin and the 4 horseman going through combat from North Africa to VE day without getting a scratch. Well, except for Luke Sky-walker who hurts his leg at Omaha Beach.
