why is it R?

this movie is definitely up there with good war movies of its time, but why is it R? I know its violent but you never see any bullet wounds except in like 1 scene and theres hardly any blood in the whole movie, the worst scene is when sams taking a cigar off a dead man and you can see his intestines, but thats the only bloody part, should be PG13

I believe it's because the word "cock" was used during Smitty's landmine scene and you see a close up shot of a bloody piece of flesh that The Sarge tosses over his shoulder, oddly enough. The frozen ass scene might also have helped the push toward R. Go figure.

I think the us's rating system is laughable

The MPAA didn't come up with the R rating until 1984.

D'oh! I'm an idiot. I meant PG-13. Obviously R had been around before then, as The Big Red One is R, and that's what we were talking about...

You know I was wondering that myself, the film could have easily been rated PG-13.

reply

The R rating has been around since 1968, with "The Split" being the first. PG-13 was invented in 1984, with Red Dawn being the first.

The land mine scene was actually in the PG version (complete with the word "cock" and the bloody testicle). I think the R rating stems mostly from the intestines in the restored cut (PG movies back then were lenient enough as to allow for blood spray, F-bombs, and even full nudity).

I know it's an old post but for the curious:

IMDB has the R-rated version as being a 2004 "reconstruction". It seems that the original rating was PG. One of the original posters I could find online looks like it has PG in the one corner but it's masked or damaged a bit and hard to read.

reply

Yes, that is correct.
