like an inferior version of...

While watching "bad timing" i kept being reminded of bunuel's "That obscure object of desire." I couldn't help comparing the two, and obscure object always came out ahead. anyone else agree? the relationships had pretty much the same dynamic, the male character tries to control and tame a free spirit, they go back and forth, etc. possibility of an an homage?

The editing and chronology of bad timing was different and interesting, and i don't think the movie would have been as entertaining (or bearable for that matter) without it. but, that being said, why eat dominoes pizza when you can have giordono's?

Since you mention it, I found that "Bitter Moon" covered a similar territory with a similar psychological acuity AND it was quite funny, if no comedy. The serious defect here is that, while Garfunkel is believable in the role, he is neither charismatic nor quite repulsive enough (in his persona, rather than his actions, which are plenty reprehensible). Whereas Peter Coyote, he's so stupid and smug in such an affable way that I had to identify with him.

I also like Obscure Object better, but Bad Timing was really well done and it was the editing that made the film, because it was extremely thoughtful.

However, it doesn't remind me of Obscure Object at all. I could see how you could see the similarities, but to me, I can't quite see it. Maybe I need to watch Obscure Object again, but they seem like 2 completely different movies.

I see exactly where you are coming from the key point here being a clash of personalities/assumptions but I have to agree also with the other guy that they are fundamentally different films, the male character in Bunuel's is far more likeable and I think this is too assert the difference in personalities. THe main difference being that Bunuel's is a satire first and foremost, this is not!
Coming to think of it the acting, the drama, the plot twists all of these are far better done in Bunuel's.
This film left me frustrated!

why is obscure object of blah blah blah better? because bunuel made it?
and the main character is patently not supposed to be "likeable".what a stupid complaint.
roeg is too edgy for you. stick with your safe, homogenzied little bunuel film.
