Christopher Walken should've played Alex

With all due respect to Mr. Garfunkel of course.

i agree, art garfunkel always showed such wooden acting, another prime example is in BOXING HELENA. he was probably the one imperfect thing in the movie...

I've always loved watching Art walk in this film. He glided.

Well--in True Romance, you got to see a face-off between Walken & Dennis Hopper.

Nothing. I just thought that was a great scene.

DeNiro & Duvall starred as brothers in True Confessions. Best brother act ever.
Hoffman & Voight in Midnight Cowboy. Caan & Duvall did 2 films together. I'd like to see Jack & Dusty Hoffman work together. DeNiro & Keitel have worked together twice--as have Jack & Keitel.
Check out Hackman & Pacino in Scarecrow.
I'm gonna stop here. LOL.

I'm sure you're right about deniro & Keitel, since both are Scorcese faves.
Well--scheduling & all...hard to line 'em up. Even Cheech & Chong got tired of each others' company.

Always overlooked because it's porn is the classic NOTHING TO HIDE, which I saw at a press screening in NYC (Magno s.r.) in 1981. John Leslie and Richard Pacheco are the two pals in this hardcore takeoff on Of Mice and Men. When people say this film has the best acting in porn history, they aren't kidding.

I JUST LIKED ART GARFUNKEL AS ALEX

reply

No way dude. Walken is too obviously a sinister, evil bastard and that's not neccesarily what's going down at all. Having such a typecast actor play the male lead would have given the game away straight away, as well as destroying the films wonderful ambiguity.

reply

I agree entirely. Art is fantastic in the role.

reply

I think so too. I think he was very realistic in the role and conveys so much ambivilence within the character.

Come. It is time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man...

I agree Walken may well of been ideal Im sorry to say that Art just didn't convince he needed to have the bitter attitude and his complete lack of sex appeal really dissapointed the mood. I'l be honest the film had a hell of a lot of potential but left a sour taste in the mouth. The actress wasn't great either.

reply

I agree!!! Art Garfunkel was ok in it, but Christopher Walken would have been better. For a start he's a lot more attractive and that would have made it more believable...!

reply

Garfunkel looked like he was heavily sedated most of the time - but I guess that´s what was called for and how Roeg wanted it. Russell on the other hand did quite a bit of overacting and on some occasions looked quite awkward and sort of stilted. Hard to believe she was taking her cues from the director there... and also it might explain why she pretty much disappeared from major films soon afterwards. She really wasn´t that good.

No way. Art Garfunkel was nerdy, intense, and intelligent. Seemingly controlled and "stale," but really sexy at the same time. They needed someone who appeared harmless, but was really powerful in terms of playing with her head.

I thought he was surprisingly sexy.

Rogerscorpion said: "DeNiro & Keitel have worked together twice".

They have worked together at least four times: Mean Streets (1973); Taxi Driver (1976); Falling in Love (1984); Little Fockers (2010).

I could not disagree more! Art was absolutely brilliant in this film. Subtle expressions, sudden intake of breath when surprised rather than exaggerated mugging like Walken would have done. The character of Alex Linden is a control freak and ultra-concerned with appearances. He is a master at keeping his expressions and demeanor OUTWARDLY calm while inwardly seething, scheming, fretting. This part was perfectly played and I cannot imagine how anyone else could have done it better.

reply

ANYBODY else should have played Alex. An actor would have been nice.

Someone who didn't look like a hairy baby bird with his shirt off would have made me cry from gratitude. I'll never get the image of Garfunkel's torso out of my head. The horror....the horror.

Also, someone who could do accents (or an actual German speaker) should have played the cop. I love Harvey, but man, what a casting disaster. Did he coach Costner in ROBIN HOOD?

Was Walken in the running for this role? I think he would have been good and he's an actor I much like, but in 1986 Walken was too handsome to embody Alex with all his hang-ups and neuroses.
