Why didn't they set it in America?

If it had been set in Harlem it would have done much better.

reply

Brixton toasters in Harlem. Great idea!!!

Who cares if the film was a financial success. It was a brilliant depiction of racial tension in Deptford and a million miles away from what American blacks experience. It was supposed to reflect British life and it did it with a raw intensity that Hollywood doesn't apply to it's films. Babylon worked because it wasn't American.

I've read a few of you posts. Why do you think that everything made in Britain would be better if it was either American made or came with subtitles?

Yeh right why not set Quadrophenia in Atalntic city instead of Brighton.

I think that's called Jersey Shore.

Come to think of it, they should re-do Jersey shore... in Jersey.

I was an extra in the movie (ahhh, the halcyon days of my youth) and after hearing the sound track again recently decided to track the movie down. Eventually got two copies: one from the helpful guys at Dub Vendor at 150 Ladbroke Grove (www.dubvendor.co.uk) and one from the RARO video of Italy. So good to re-visit: I'd forgotten what a brilliant, ground-breaking movie it was! AM DELIGHTED THEY DID NOT MAKE IT IN AMERICA - IT WAS A BLACK BRITISH FILM ABOUT THE BLACK BRITISH EXPERIENCE fer Chrissakes!!!!!

reply

its about british black culture it would not have worked in the usa like the italian job [stallone ]

I don't remember writing that but i was probably offended as a Londoner from the 80's . What a ridiculous ( or deliberately provocative ) OP .

Nah, I think you hit the nail on the head. The original poster WAS a prick.

Thanks - either it's just a typical troll post or North Americans are still surprising me with their ignorance . This film was one of the most realistic i have ever seen . We still have 'wiggers' in Hackney you know !

I totally agree but to be honest, I'd be amazed if more than a handfull of Americans saw this as it got such a limited release.

However, the *beep* who started this ridiculous thread has blathered on in a similar vein on the Only Fools And Horses thread too. This leads me to suspect that:

a). He was drunk or stoned
b). He's mad
c). He's a troll and just keen to stir up a hornet's nest.
d). He's so criminally stupid he was sired from a satanic coupling of Sarah Palin and George W. Bush.

e) He was the unwanted ba stard child of an illicit affair between a shopping mall nightwatchman & the manager of Macburgers. Born in the storeroom & raised on junk & coke happy meals , his father used to let him roam the mall at night , under his watchful CCTV gaze .

Having only known this pinnacle of U.S. culture - and with a brain made of cheese - one night whilst online in the malls computer store he stumbled apon British TV shows & this film . Incomprehensible - he began typing . . . . .

......... one letter per minute, his brain dulled by his exposure to junk food, junk movies and junk culture. His view of the world moulded by the evil mixture of Fox News, Ann Coulter and other pea-brained 'political commentators', his view of reality moulded by repeated viewings of Anna Nichole Smith and the sure knowledge that there was no civilisation or culture beyond America's shores.

"Why do these people speak differently to me" he asks himself with a confused shake of the head. "Where are the explosions? These people can't be real. Real people are only one dimensional".

In his confusion, this sad, braindead moron has no idea of what he's been missing. He's too stupid to realise that there is quality, well-rounded entertainment out there. America (not to mention Britain, Australia, Germany, Italy and other countries he's never heard of) has made it with a goodly selection of decent film and tv and has a rich heritage he could be proud of. Selected works by Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, Oliver Stone and other talented directors that he'll never see cos there are too many like him out there, filling the multiplexes everytime Michael Bay, Uwe Boll and other popcorn producing craphounds premier their latest *beep*

He's too dumb to realise too that Babylon did have an American equivilent (or as close as it would get) called 'Do The Right Thing'. Not quite as good, not as raw but every bit as angry and a pretty good film in itself.

Still, he hasn't come back to defend himself so I guess these words are wasted but it's still fun taking the piss out of people as *beep* as this.

Apon reaching puberty - and having found the Hip Hop section in the malls music store - it dons stupidly oversized jeans , running shoes , and a baseball cap ( though it knows not what this sport is ) and of course a basketball shirt ( still don't know ) before heading to the malls gun shop to 'pop a cap' in it's own ass .

Possibly one of the dumbest questions I've ever read on an IMDB message board.

"I feel like saying more, but I don't want to ruin the surprise."
