Are we really supposed to buy this crap as a reasonable explanation why he killed a random stranger? I remember hearing Bergman talk about psychoanalysts in a slightly indifferent/condescending tone in an old Dick Cavett interview, so I hope that was just his way of mocking the profession and their Freudian babble.

Gotta be honest, this movie doesn't work on any level. The dude just seems like a boring sociopath. And if the narrator has to literally explain that just one single word or action could set him off...well, that kind of sucks all the drama or mystery out of the thing. It's like the end of Psycho where the shrink explains the crux of the movie like a DVD bonus content, director's commentary.
