Burt should have got the Oscar

What do you think?.........a great role that only comes along once in a lifetime. Especially for an older character. Burt played this movie beautifully.

reply

Absolutely! It is a romantic, sad and beautiful role with a touch of action. I guess the Academy decided to give the "geezer" nod to Henry Fonda that year for the sticky "On Golden Pond."

reply

Yes, but Fonda had never won an Oscar and Burt had his from Elmer Gantry. Hollywood generally tries to give old movie stars an Oscar before they die. That's why John Wayne won for True Grit. That's why everyone was shocked that Lauren Bacall DIDN'T win in 1997. She ended up dying without an Oscar.

reply

Yup....I agree with you both. Lancaster gave the best performance by an actor that year....totally agreed. Henry Fonda, on the other hand, had never won an Oscar and...let's get honest....probably deserved at least 7 or 8 times in his career deserved to have won the Oscar (The Grapes Of Wrath, and Sometimes A Great Notion come to mind.)

No....On Golden Pond was not Fonda's greatest moment. It was just a "meh" movie, but the old guy was dying, and he deserved one of those golden boys for his lifetime of accomplishment.

By the same token, why the hell did Katherine Hepburn win Best Actress that year? She already had 3 Oscars at that point, so her situation was nothing like Fonda's. I thought her performance was nowhere near the mark of deserving a win, not to mention that Hepburn is one of the most overrated actresses of all time. Nope....that year, the Oscar should have gone to Susan Sarandon.

I've always thought that there had to be some politics involved. It should have won all five Oscar nominations it received. In my opinion, it's one of the finest American films of the last fifty years. In any case, I haven't had much use for The Oscars for the last couple of decades.

Happy New Year!

Burt definitely should have won an Oscar for this film. I loved it. While it took place in the USA I believe it was a Canadian film.

With a French director.

In a career that was full of great characters and performances, I like this one of Lancaster's the best. It is perhaps one of my fave Sarandon characters/performances, as well.

Henry Fonda needed a makeup award for not winning for Grapes of Wrath. Lancaster had already won Best Actor in 1960 or so.

The Academy often likes to consider who is due for an award. But Burt did give an Oscar-worthy performance
