A remake of Pickpocket

I just recently got to see this after watching Paul Schrader's excellent Mishima: Life in Four Chapters and having been a big fan of his work with Scorsese. I was somewhat surprised to realize its actually a redux of 'Pickpocket' by Robert Bresson, with the ending being almost identical. Although, he admits he's a big fan of the style of Robert Bresson, somehow I didn't think this film worked because it lacked the Bresson restraint. It was a very interesting film regardless with a great performance by Richard Gere.
